Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

DAYTON, Ohio - The Kernels lost 3-2 in the final game of the series at Dayton on Monday night as the Dragons avoided the sweep. However, Cedar Rapids won four of six games on the road trip that also took them to Bowling Green. The team opens up a three-game series in Cedar Rapids against Burlington on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m.

Dayton (16-20, 52-52) took their first lead of the series right away in the first inning. Jonathan Reynoso singled with one out and quickly scored on a RBI double down the right field line by Robert Ramirez, putting the Dragons ahead 1-0.

Cedar Rapids (20-16, 51-55) responded by tying the game 1-1 in their very next at-bat in the second inning. Alex Swim collected one of his two singles to left to start the frame. He scored later in the inning on a wild pitch by Dayton starter Sal Romano.

Romano (7-9) struck out a career-high 10 Kernels through five innings for the win. He allowed just one run on five hits while walking one. It was the second consecutive game the Dragons starter had struck out 10 after Amir Garrett punched out 10 Kernels on Sunday afternoon.

Aaron Slegers (7-7) started for the Kernels and took the loss. He allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out seven and walking one.

Dayton scored twice in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead with three extra-base hits against Slegers. Ronald Bueno began the inning by tripling into the Kernels bullpen down the right-field line. Two batters later, Jamodrick McGruder's RBI triple deep into the right field corner gave the Dragons a one run lead. Reynoso followed with a RBI double to left to plate McGruder, putting Dayton ahead 3-1.

Mitch Garver led off the sixth inning with his team-best 14th home run of the season. It went to deep left-center, cutting the Dragons lead to 3-2. Garver also recorded a single on the night for a two-hit performance. The homer came off of reliever Nick Howard, this year's first-round pick of the Reds. It was the first hit and run he had allowed in his fourth appearance.

That was the final run the Kernels scored on the night as Radhames Quezada and Alejandro Chacin closed out the final 2 1/3 innings. Quezada allowed one hit and one walk in his 1 1/3 innings while Chacin walked one and struck out the side in the ninth to record his 12th save.

Josue Montanez and Jared Wilson combined to allow no runs or hits in relief for the Kernels. Montanez threw two innings, striking out two. Wilson went one inning and walked one.

The Kernels return home on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. to take on the Burlington Bees, the Midwest League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. It's a Twins Tuesday, sponsored by Great Clips. Fans can get an online coupon from the Kernels Facebook page or email newsletter for a 2-for-1 ticket offer.
