Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Hickory, NC - The Delmarva Shorebirds saw an early lead slip away as the Hickory Crawdads won 3-2 on Monday evening. Nomar Mazara belted a go-ahead solo home run in the 8th inning for the decisive score. Delmarva (55-52) has now lost four games in a row, as well as four consecutive series.
The Shorebirds got out to an early lead for the third consecutive night. After singles by Creede Simpson and Chance Sisco, Conor Bierfeldt one-hopped an RBI double to the left-center wall. Sisco later scored on a wild pitch to give Delmarva a 2-0 lead.
Steven Brault cruised on the mound until the sixth inning. At one point, Brault retired 11 batters in a row. The left-hander also matched a career-high with nine strikeouts. With two outs in the sixth, Brault walked Zach Cone, then he allowed an RBI double to Kellin Deglan. Dylan Rheault relieved the Shorebirds starter, successfully stranding the tying run on second base.
Hickory continued to climb their way back into the game. Travis Demeritte led off the eighth with a double that split the right-center gap. Luis Marte looped an RBI single down the left field line to knot the game at two runs apiece. In the eighth, Nomar Mazara launched a solo home run, his 19th of the year, to give Hickory a 3-2 lead.
Jose Valdespina sealed the win for Hickory with a perfect ninth inning. Cole Wiper earned the win with two scoreless innings in relief, while Valdespina recorded his third save. Dylan Rheault took the loss for Delmarva.
The Shorebirds finish their road trip with the series finale in Hickory. Delmarva turns to right-hander Nick Cunningham (1-3, 8.68) against Crawdads' left-hander Frank Lopez (3-3, 2.43) on Tuesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm at L.P. Frans Stadium.
