July 28, 2014 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release

The Vermont Mountaineers played the Sanford Mainers on Monday in the battle for first place in the New England Collegiate Baseball League's (NECBL) Northern Division. The two sides played two seven-inning games as part of a doubleheader.

GAME 1

The Mountaineers defeated the Mainers in game one by a 5-1 final.

Vermont pushed across three runs in the second inning, which proved to be more than enough support for starter Daniel Koger (Alabama-Huntsville).

Nick Solak (Louisville) started the offense off with a one out infield single. Casey Rodrigue (Indiana) followed with an infield single of his own to set up first and second with one out. Ian Sagdal (Washington State) loaded the bases with one out by reaching on a bunt single. Two batters later, Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) laced a two RBI single to left, scoring Solak and Rodrigue to give Vermont a 2-0 lead. Jack Parenty followed Brock's hit

with an RBI infield single to score Sagdal and open up a 3-0 lead.

The Mountaineers added a run in the third. Blake Tiberi (Louisville) reached on an infield single. After Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg) singled, Solak bunted for a single to load the bases with no outs. Rodrigue grounded into a double play, scoring Tiberi to make it 4-0 Mountaineers.

Vermont's final run of the game came in the fourth, when Tiberi hit a sacrifice fly to score Josh Treff (Northeastern), who led off the inning with a single earlier on.

Koger was very impressive, dealing seven innings of one-run ball. The southpaw allowed just eight hits and two walks in that span. He struck out four. With the seven-inning complete game, Koger improves to 4-1 on the summer.

Jeff Singer (Monmouth) took the loss for Sanford, moving to 1-1 on the season. He gave up five earned runs on twelve hits and one walk over five innings of work. He struck out one.

GAME 2

Play was suspended following the bottom of the third inning, with the Mainers leading 3-1. Heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms swept through the Sanford area at approximately 6:35 p.m. local time.

Vermont struck first in inning number one, when Colin Lyman (Louisville) ripped a single up the middle. After Lyman stole second, Solak laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Lyman to third. Tiberi hit a sacrifice fly to left to score the runner from third and give Vermont the early 1-0 lead.

Sanford tied the game at one in the bottom of the second before taking a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third. Leadoff man Drake Parker (Vanderbilt) reached on a bunt single. Nick Lovullo (Holy Cross) followed with an infield single to set up first and second with no outs. After Caden Bailey (Georgia State) laid down a sacrifice bunt, Cory Raley (Temple) smacked a two RBI single to score the runners from second and third and give Sanford a 3-1 lead. At the end of the half inning, weather led the umpires to suspend the game.

The game will resume Thursday at 4:30 p.m., when the Mountaineers head back to Sanford to conclude this game and play another full nine-inning game.

Vermont currently sits two and a half games ahead of the second place Mainers. The team concluded the road trip with a 3-2 mark.

The Mountaineers have officially clinched a top two-seed in the Northern Division playoffs, which are scheduled to begin Aug. 4. Vermont will have home field advantage for at least the first round of the 2014 NECBL postseason.

Vermont returns to action on Tuesday evening, when the team hosts the Valley Blue Sox for a 6:30 p.m. meeting at Recreation Field. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com. Northstar Fireworks Display and Froggy 100.9 sponsor a fireworks show and Vermont food bank collection night at the ballpark, where fans are encouraged to bring canned goods for donation.
