Omaha Storm Chasers July 28th Game Notes

July 28, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

YESTERDAY'S LOSS: Omaha suffered their sixth loss in seven games at New Orleans as Clayton Mortensen allowed seven runs in 5.0 innings (has now given up 17 runs in his last 12.1 innings). Omaha has allowed eight runs or more in seven of the 15 meetings vs the Zephyrs.

NEW OWN-LEANS: Omaha has lost 11 of the 15 games vs New Orleans, their most losses they have ever suffered against the Zephyrs in a season since joining the PCL in 1998. With a loss tonight, Omaha would not have multiple wins at Zephyr Field for the first time in their PCL history. They have a 10-21 record vs the Zephyrs (323) since the start of the 2013 season, which is just slightly better than their 9-19 record vs Iowa (.321) for the worst record against any opponent.

HIT MERRIFIELD: Whit Merrifield has a 23-game on-base streak (24 games counting his two hits in the July 12 suspended game), the longest streak for Omaha this season and the longest active PCL streak, and is batting .343 (34-for-99) during the streak. He has reached base in 39 of his 42 games with an at-bat since joining Omaha June 7, and is tied for the PCL lead (Sacramento's Shane Peterson) with 65 hits in that span (but has 67 hits counting July 12). It is the longest on-base streak for Omaha since Irving Falu had a 29-gamer from July 6-August 9, 2013 (was 4th longest PCL streak last year). There have been five streaks longer than Merrifield's 24-gamer in the PCL this season.

HAPPY ENDINGS: Omaha has a record of 18-9 in series finales this season, including 10-4 in road games (more road games finale wins than their nine last year). Omaha has also won seven consecutive roadtrip finales after losing their first game of that type in April (7-1 record).

BRINGIN THE PENA: Francisco Pena hit his team-leading 22nd homer yesterday (one of four Triple-A players with 22 or more homers). He has the most homers in the PCL this month at nine (matches his career high for homers in a entire year entering 2014). Pena now has 31 homers in 136 games in the PCL, equaling his 31 homers in 525 games at any other professional level. PEGUE-ROAD: Carlos Peguero hit his first two homers of the season at Werner Park, but has hit 12 consecutive home runs in road games (the 12 round-trippers are tied for the second most road homers in the PCL, trailing Francisco Pena's 14). Peguero leads Omaha with 32 road RBI.

CIRI-OUS: Pedro Ciriaco has 12 hits in 10 games since rejoining Omaha on July 11 (11 hits in last seven games), and in his last 16 Triple-A games he has a batting average of .367 (22-for-60).

CHECK THE RECORD: Johnny Giavotella has joined the all-time top ten in Omaha history earlier this season in RBI (currently ranks 7th at 231) and hits (currently ranks 9th at 468 hits), but he is a run shy of 10th place all-time with 223 runs (Joe Vitiello, 1994-99, ranks 10th at 224).
