D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (July 28, 2014) - D.C. United has announced that goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra will miss the remainder of the season with a ruptured left Achilles tendon. The Woodbrigde, Va., native picked up the injury in an international friendly with Fulham F.C. on Saturday, July 26.
Dykstra is scheduled to have surgery on Wednesday, July 30, with Dr. Ken Fine of The Orthopaedic Center in Washington, D.C.
"Andrew has been an integral part of our team success so far this season, and we are very disappointed for him to sustain this injury," said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper. "We are very confident that Andrew will be back on the field next spring."
In his four starts this season, Dykstra went 3-0-1 with two shutouts and a 0.75 goals against average. He signed with United in 2012, and has since spent time with the Charleston Battery and United's USL PRO affiliate, Richmond Kickers. In 2013, he was named USL Goalkeeper of the Year with the Kickers as he finished the season with the league's lowest GAA at 0.863. Overall, he has started and played in 21 MLS games with a record of 8-6-7.
In the wake of Dykstra's injury, United will recall goalkeeper Joe Willis from the Richmond Kickers. In four seasons with the club, Willis has appeared in 23 games (22 starts) with a record of 6-13-4.
