SWB Game Notes

July 28, 2014 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

THE STOPPER: Behind seven shutout frames from starting pitcher Bryan Mitchell (2-1), the RailRiders halted the Pawtucket Red Sox franchise-record 11-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon.

BEST WEEK EVER: Fresh off his first two career Triple-A wins, Mitchell has been named the International League's Pitcher of the Week for the span from July 21-27. The youngest member of SWB's pitching staff went 2-0 in two starts on the week while tossing 12.0 scoreless innings. He scattered six hits and a walk over five frames on Tuesday in a 7-0 shutout of the Braves at Gwinnett. Yesterday he posted the second-longest outing of his career with seven scoreless innings while surrendering just three hits with no walks and six strikeouts. The 23-year-old Reidsville, N.C. native owns a 2-1 record with a 2.70 ERA with the RailRiders. He has not allowed a run in three of his four starts.

REMEMBER WHEN: The only other RailRider to receive IL weekly honors this season was Jose Pirela, who was named Batter of the Week for the span of May 26-June 2. Pirela later took the IL's May Player of the Month award and became the team's lone mid-season All-Star. Mitchell is the first RailRider to take the IL's weekly pitching accolades since Chien-Ming Wang did so for his appearances from May 27-June 3, 2013.

HEATING UP: Adonis Garcia produced his third straight multi-hit effort and stretched the team's top active hitting streak to 10 games. He went 2-for-4 with his 17th double of the season. During his string of success, which began right out of the All-Star break, he has gone 16-for-43 with five extra-base hits, six RBIs and six runs scored for slashes of .372/.400/.535/.935. He has lifted his average up to .313. That places him 5th in the IL and 4th on the Yankees' farm. Garcia has hit .517 against Pawtucket this year (15-for-27, 5-2B, 2HR, 6RBI).

MY BAD: Garcia made his fifth error of the season and his third at third base. That snapped the team's season-high string of error-free ball at nine games. After spending a good portion of the season's first few months with the IL's worst fielding percentage, the RailRiders entered today 10th in the 14-team league at .978 while Pawtucket stood 2nd at .983. Garcia's two-out, ninth-inning error led to an unearned run that spoiled SWB's ninth shutout of the year.

LIVING ON THE EDGE: Edgmer Escalona allowed just the unearned run en route to his second SWB save. In nine outings as a RailRider he has given up just one earned run (0.53 ERA), 12 hits (.203 BAA) and two walks (0.82 WHIP).

YO JOE: Corban Joseph singled and scored to keep up his in-season turnaround. He has hit safely in eight of his last nine games played, going 12-for-28 (.429) in that time. He has brought his average up to .254, the best contact clip he has sported since closing play at Buffalo at .265.

FLASH: Taylor Dugas singled, walked, sacrificed and scored as the nine-hole hitter. In 18 games this month he has hit .345/.393/.418/.812 with a pair of sacrifice bunts and one sac fly. The first-year Triple-A man has his average up to a season-high-tying .318.

CURSES, ZOILED AGAIN!: Zoilo Almonte went 0-for-2 with two walks, a run scored and his team-best 57th run. He also leads the team in homers (16), but has toiled against Pawtucket. He has hit .080 (2-for-25, 7K) against the PawSox, both singles. Against the rest of the IL, he has hit .299.

PAW PRINTS: Over their franchise-record 11-game win streak, Pawtucket outscored its foes, 71-32. Friday night's series opener, a 10-2 SWB loss, made for Pawtucket's most lopsided win in this spurt. Pawtucket's Mookie Betts spoiled Mitchell's modest run at perfect with a fourth-inning broken-bat single. In seven games against SWB he has hit .438 (14-for-32) with six RBIs. He has hit .298 against the rest of the IL.
