PCL Names Player and Pitcher of the Week
July 28, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Matt McBride of the Colorado Springs Sky Sox and Justin Germano of the Round Rock Express have been named Pacific Coast League Player and Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 21-27, the league office announced today.
Matt McBride collected at least one hit in all eight games he played in during the week, accumulating a PCL-high 13 knocks. The right fielder/first baseman's .464 average ranked third in the league, while his .484 on-base percentage placed sixth. He is currently on a nine-game hit streak and has accounted for at least one run in each of those games for the Sky Sox. McBride produced an RBI in six-consecutive games during the week and also compiled four multi-hit performances. The Eastern Pennsylvania native tallied his second three-hit game of the season Tuesday in the Sky Sox's loss at Nashville. The 29-year-old is batting .354 since being activated from the disabled list on July 11.
The Lehigh University product was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 2006 as their second round supplemental pick. The Colorado Rockies acquired McBride from the Indians on July 30, 2011, in a trade that sent pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez to Cleveland. The following season, McBride made his MLB debut playing 31 games for the Rockies. He has now won three Player of the Week awards in his career, with the previous coming in 2010 as a member of the Akron Aeros in the Eastern League.
Justin Germano went the distance for a PCL-best third time this season, tossing a complete-game victory Thursday for the Express at Oklahoma City. The right-hander scattered one run and three hits to the RedHawks, while striking out two batters. Germano yielded just two walks and of the 100 pitches he threw that night, 65 were for strikes. The win was his fourth of the year and lowered his ERA to 4.25. The Los Angeles native has pitched 114.1 innings this season, ranking him ninth in the league, while his 72 strikeouts are the most on the Express' pitching staff.
Germano was originally selected by the San Diego Padres in the 13th round of the 2000 First-Year Player Draft out of Claremont High School in Claremont, California. The 31-year-old signed with Texas Rangers on Jan. 14, 2014, marking the eighth major league organization he has played for in his 14-year professional career. This season he has appeared in two games for the Rangers as a reliever. This is the third time Germano has received a Pitcher of the Week award from the PCL in his career, with the first two coming as a member of the Portland Beavers in 2004 and 2005.
