Canadians Dig Early Hole In Spokane And Can't Climb Out

July 28, 2014 - Northwest League (NWL1) - Vancouver Canadians News Release

(Avista Stadium - Spokane, WA) - A four-run bottom of the 1st inning saw Canadians LHP Zak Wasilewski allowed the only Indians they would score on the night as Vancouver opened up an 11-game road trip with a heartbreaking 4-2 loss in Spokane on Sunday night.

Wasilewski who picked up his fourth straight loss after opening the season 2-0 lasted just 1/3 of an inning after allowing four walks and a hit and while he didn't get much defensive support when the ball was put in play, the Canadians left-hander left the game with his team trailing 4-0.

Vancouver's bullpen was dominant allowing just four hits over the next seven innings shutting out Spokane who rode the four runs right into the sunset as the Canadians were limited to just a pair of runs in the series opener with Indians RHP Reed Garrett going five innings allowing three hits while striking out six to pick up his fourth win of the summer against just one loss.

Offensively, the Canadians got a 2-for-4 night from LF Chris Carlson as well as a 2-for-3 night from 2B Christian Vazquez while the middle of the Vancouver order (hitters 3-through-7) went a collective 2-for-18 with Carlson managing both hits. 1st round selection DH Max Pentecost went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in the loss.

Vancouver falls to 2-4 (.333) in the second half and move into a pair of times in the Northwest League standings as both the Indians and C's are 2-4 through six second half games, and both are now 27-17 (.614), tops in the Northwest League overall standings.

These two teams meet back at Avista Stadium at 6:35pm on Monday, July 28th at 6:35pm with RHP Chase Mallard getting the ball for Vancouver.
