Charlotte Knights News Release

(LOUISVILLE, KY) - A day after rain suspended game two of their doubleheader on Saturday, the Louisville Bats beat the Charlotte Knights by a score of 5-0 on Sunday to complete the suspended game. Thanks to a remarkable offensive day by Carlos Sanchez, and solid pitching from Erik Johnson, the Knights went on to win game two by a score of 6-4 on Sunday. The Knights, who have won 11 of their last 14 games, improved to 16-9 in July.

Charlotte outfielder Jordan Danks played in both games on Sunday and passed Joe Borchard for the most games played in Charlotte Knights franchise history with his 447th and 448th career Knights game. Danks, who is in his fifth season with Charlotte, went a combined 1-for-7 at the plate and is now just three hits away from tying Borchard for the most hits in franchise history (439).

Sanchez put the Knights on the scoreboard in the third inning with a grand slam -- Charlotte's fourth of the season. Dan Black, Michael Taylor, and Andy Wilkins have Charlotte's other three grand slams this season. For Sanchez, it was his sixth home run of the year and it gave the Knights a 4-0 lead. He finished the game with two hits, the grand slam, and five RBIs.

Charlotte starter Erik Johnson (5-6, 6.48) won his third-straight game. Johnson, who entered the season ranked as the second-best prospect in the White Sox system by Baseball America, allowed three runs on eight hits over five innings for the victory. He has four wins over his last six starts. Reliever Ryan Kussmaul allowed one run over the final two innings to earn his fourth save of the year.

Andy Wilkins went a combined 2-for-5 in the two games. He extended his hit-streak to 12 games in game one, but failed to get a hit in game two. Wilkins, who is the reigning International League Batter of the Week, has a chance to win the award for a second consecutive week. In eight games, Wilkins hit .467 with 10 runs scored, three doubles, five home runs, and 16 RBIs.

RHP David Cales (0-1, 9.00) made his Knights debut in game one and allowed four runs over four innings and was saddled with the loss. Cales was promoted to Charlotte from Double-A Birmingham on Friday.

The two teams will conclude their series on Monday from Louisville with a 7:05 p.m. game. RHP Chien-Ming Wang (10-5, 3.77) will make his third start of the season with Charlotte. He won eight games for Louisville earlier this season. LHP David Holmberg (0-5, 4.88) gets the start for the Bats. Pre-game radio coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 730 AM, WRHI (94.3 FM and 1340 AM) and online at www.charlotteknights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action. The Knights return home on Tuesday to open a four-game series from BB&T Ballpark.
