Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (July 27, 2014) - The Southern Illinois Miners got a tremendous effort from starter Miguel Ramirez, as he tossed a complete game, the second by a Miners pitcher this season and the first of nine in- nings in length, and Southern Illinois supported him with two long home runs in a 9-3 win over the Florence Freedom at Rent One Park on Sunday.
Florence took a 1-0 lead in the first on Rob Kelly's RBI single, but with two outs and two runners on base in the bottom half of the frame against Florence starter Michael O'Neal, Chris Burke launched a three-run homer to left-center, his tenth of the season, to give the Miners a 3-1 lead.
Ramirez then embarked on a streak of innings that would see him only surrender one baserunner and not give up a single hit. The New Mexico native retired 15 of 16 batters he faced after the RBI single in the first, with the only baserunner coming on an error and erased by a double play in the fifth. The Miners would then give him some more runs to work with.
After Niko Vasquez was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game, Frank Martinez ripped a two-run shot to right-center to make the score 5-1 Miners. Vasquez would add an RBI double to make it 6-1 in the sixth and the teams traded runs down the stretch. Ramirez surrendered two solo home runs, one in the sev- enth and one in the ninth, but finished off the game on 104 pitches to earn his fifth win of the season.
Eight of the nine batters in the Miners order had at least one hit, and seven of the nine scored at least one run. Vasquez, Martinez and Burke were joined by Matt Jones and Ryan Cavan in the RBI column as the Min- ers won their 12th series opener at home in 13 tries this season with a complete, team effort.
They will go for the series victory tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. Matt Bywater gets the start for the Miners against Florence's Casey Henn.
