Tampa Takes Series with 6-4 Win over Fort Myers

TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees (20-16) secured a series victory by defeating the Fort Myers Miracle (23-12) 6-4 in the finale on Sunday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The Yankees finished with seven wins in the eight-game home stand.

A back-and-forth battle began once the T-Yanks struck for two runs in the first inning. Danny Oh led off with a single and advanced one out later on a base hit to right by Eric Jagielo. Both scored as Dante Bichette Jr. doubled into right field.

Mike Gonzalez blasted his second home run of the series with a solo shot in the second off LHP Conner Kendrick. Gonzalez is now on a 18-game hit streak for the Miracle.

Tampa got that run back when Angelo Gumbs, Trent Garrison and Anderson Feliz each singled to begin the bottom of the second.

The Miracle pulled even in the third with another home run. Travis Harrison reached on a two-out single before Dalton Hicks crushed a ball over the Walgreens Deck in right field, tying the game at 3-3.

Kendrick surrendered the go-ahead run in the fourth. With runners at second and third, Byron Buxton delivered an RBI single into left as Fort Myers gained a 4-3 lead.

The Yankees did not take long to respond. Claudio Custodio rippled a double down the left field line with one out in the fourth. A single by Oh drove in the tying run. Aaron Judge singled and Jagielo walked, loading the bases. One out later, Jose Rosario lined a two-run single into center field, giving Tampa a 6-4 advantage.

Kendrick (4-7) earned the win after allowing four runs on six hits in five innings of work, walking four while striking out four. It was the southpaw's first win since June 16th.

Fort Myers' starter Ethan Mildren (1-1) took the loss, yielding six runs on 11 hits in four innings. The righty walked two and struck out four.

RHP Jose Pena made his Tampa Yankees debut in relief of Kendrick in the sixth. Pena retired all six batters he faced, including a strikeout. LHP Jacob Lindgren struck out four in one and two-third innings. Righty Cesar Vargas recorded the final out in the ninth, earning his sixth save of the season.

Rosario extended his hit streak to 16 games, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and the game-winning two-run single. Bichette doubled twice and picked up two RBI, going 2-for-4. Oh made his first pro start at first base and made a diving catch in the sixth inning. Oh also went 2-for-5 at the dish, with an RBI and two runs scored.

Up next, the T-Yanks begin an eight-game road trip on Monday in Port Charlotte to begin a four-game series with the Stone Crabs.Tampa will then travel to Jupiter for a four-game set against Hammerheads.
