Cannons Fall in Final Away Game

July 27, 2014 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) - Boston Cannons News Release

BOSTON, MA (July 27, 2014) - The Boston Cannons fell 23-17 at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton, Florida on Saturday night in their last away game of the season. Both the Cannons and the Launch are now tied for fifth place with a 5-7 record.

Faceoff specialist Chris Eck gave the Cannons a strong start in the first few seconds of the game. After winning the face off, Eck scored the first goal of the night, and his first goal all season. Florida responded soon after with a goal from David Earl. The game was back and first for the first few minutes as both teams are in a battle for a playoff spot.

The Cannons went ahead by three coming in to the second quarter with goals from Brent Adams, Paul Rabil, Ryan Boyle and Scott Ratliff. Adams then scored his second goal of the night to give the Cannons a comfortable 6-2 lead. In the first three minutes of the second quarter, however, McArdle buried two goals for the Launch.

The scoring in the second quarter continued with goals from Casey Powell, Kevin Cunningham, and David Earl. Both teams added a few goals on either end, as Stephen Berger, Will Manny, Brent Adams, and Owen Blye scored for Boston, but the Cannons fell behind 9-11 going into the half.

In the first few minutes of the third quarter, Florida's goalie Brett Queener made imperitive saves to keep Boston off the board. Rabil and Adams attempted to make a come back, but Jordan Hall, Roman Lao-Gosney and Steven Brooks wouldn't allow it, and continued to give Florida their largest lead of the game followed by back to back goals from Kevin Cunningham. Boston's Kevin Buchannan and Rabil put the Cannons back on the map with a couple goals to end the quarter 16-13 and looked to gain some momentum.

Florida's Steven Brooks began the fourth quarter with a wide-open shot to give the Launch a four goal lead again, followed by two goals from Powell and one from Hall. Florida went on to add three more goals to give them a comfortable nine goal lead. Desperate for a comeback, Boyle, Berger, and Manny scored a few more goals for Boston before the final whistle, falling short 23-17.

The Cannons return home to host the Launch next Saturday, August 2 at 3:00 PM at Harvard Stadium and it is the final Family Four Pack Night of the season. The game can be watched on ESPN3.com.
