Mudcats Game Notes

July 27, 2014 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Carolina Mudcats News Release

The Series vs Potomac -- The Mudcats journey to Woodbridge, Virginia, for just the second time in 2014. Carolina dropped 3-of-4 to the Nationals in their last trip to "The Pfitz." The P-Nats boast an 20-6 record against the Mud- cats at home and lead the all-time series 29-23.

Last Time Out -- The Potomac Nationals scored a walk-off, 3-2 win on Saturday night when Mike McQuillan singled home Stephen Perez in the bottom of the ninth. The Mudcats collected 13 hits in the lost, but stranded 12 runners on base. Michael Peoples was solid in the start for Carolina, allowing two runs on four hits across 5.2 innings.

Tonight's Pitching Probables -- Dylan Baker makes his second start since returning from a broken ankle this evening. Coincidentally, he also returns to the site where he suffered the injury. Baker was supposed to start against Potomac on April 13, but suffered the fracture on his way to the mound in the first inning. The right- hander has punched out 11 hitters in 9.2 innings. He enters Sunday with a 1-1 record and a 4.66 ERA. Hector Silvestre makes his debut with the Nationals tonight. The southpaw was 6-7 with a 4.14 ERA over 18 starts for the Hagerstown Suns in the South Atlantic League. Silvestre was signed out of the Dominican as an International Free Agent in 2011.

From the Top -- Despite losing five in a row, the Mudcats have maintained the lead in the CL Southern Division. The club enters Saturday with a 0.5 game lead over Myrtle Beach. More importantly, the Mudcats pace Winston- Salem by 1.5 and Salem by 3.5 games. The team travels to LewisGale Field next for their final meeting of the year with the Red Sox, but play Myrtle Beach and Winston-Salem a combined 13 times over their last 23 games. The Mudcats last made the playoffs in 2007. The Indians Advanced-A affiliate appeared in the 2011 Mills Cup Finals while in Kinston.

AirLuc -- If Billy Beane was searching for another bat to add to the Oakland Athletics' Moneyball 2.0, then, statisti- cally, Jeremy Lucas might be his guy. The former Indians State Sycamore puts the ball in the air a ton and it's no coincidence he leads the team in doubles (24) and home runs (9). His 51 RBI and 47 walks also pace the club. July has been good for the backstop offensively, owning a .306 batting average and a .932 OPS. Lucas owns a six-game hitting streak and has hit .423 during this stretch.

Lee Locked In -- Despite allowing an unearned run on two hits Sunday night, Jacob Lee ran his string of innings without allowing an earned run to 20.1. Across his last 12 appearances, Lee has allowed just two unearned runs and opposing hitters have not earned a run against him since June 10. The righty has lowered his ERA to 2.85.

Hall of Fame Connection -- The MLB Hall of Fame inducted six news members to their exclusive fraternity this afternoon. Three managers (Tony La Russa, Bobby Cox and Joe Torre) joined three players consisting of Greg Mad- dux, Tom Glavine and Frank Thomas. Mudcats pitching coach Steve Karsay has a connection to all three. Accord- ing to Elias, Karsay is the only player to play for or with all six of the inductees. Karsay played for Cox in Atlanta alongside Maddux and Glavine. He pitched for Torre in New York and was teammates with Thomas in Oakland. La Russa managed the Athletics when Karsay made his Major League debut.

Muddy's Tales -- The Mudcats host the Potomac Nationals for three games August 1-3. The series will feature Fireworks Friday with a 7 p.m. start on August 1. It's a 6 p.m. start for Military Appreciation Night on Saturday, August 2. The series with Potomac concludes with Kids Run The Bases, presented by Amerigas, on Sunday, Au- gust 3 at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by calling (919) 269-2287 or by visiting carolinamudcats.com.
