Omaha Storm Chasers July 27th Game Notes
July 27, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
LAST NIGHT'S LOSS: After scoring four runs in the top of the eighth to break up a tie game, Omaha allowed five runs in the bottom of the frame to suffer only their second loss this season when scoring seven or more runs (which have both come against New Orleans).
HIT MERRIFIELD: Whit Merrifield has a 22-game on-base streak (23 games counting his two hits in the July 12 suspended game), the longest streak for Omaha this season and the longest active PCL streak, and is batting .337 (32-for-95) during the streak. He has reached base in 38 of his 41 games with an at-bat since joining Omaha June 7, and is tied for the PCL lead (Sacramento's Shane Peterson) with 63 hits in that span (65 hits counting July 12). It is the longest on-base streak for Omaha since Irving Falu had a 29-gamer from July 6-August 9, 2013 (4th longest PCL streak last year). There have been seven streaks longer than Merrifield's 23-gamer in the PCL this season.
BRINGIN THE PENA: Francisco Pena hit his team-leading 21st homer last night, and dating back to June 27 he has a PCL-leading nine homers in 21 games. Pena now has 30 homers in 135 games in the PCL, nearly equaling his 31 homers in 525 games at any other professional level. His eight homers this month (one of four PCL players with 8+ HR in July, including Matt Fields) is a career high for homers in a month (previous career high was his six homers in April of this season).
THE BIG C.C.: Christian Colon has a hit in 21 straight games vs New Orleans dating back to May 27, 2013 (.348, 31-for-89), and he has the most hits of any Storm Chaser in the season series at 19 hits (19-for-51, .373) with 12 runs and 10 RBI in 12 games against the Zephyrs in 2014.
CIRI-OUSLY: Pedro Ciriaco has 12 hits in his nine games since rejoining Omaha on July 11 (including three straight multi-hit games against the Zephyrs). In his last 16 games at the Triple-A level, dating back to May 6, Ciriaco is batting .390 (22-for-59) with multiple hits in nine of those 16 games (batted .179, 7-for-39, in his first 14 games with the Storm Chasers this year).
ROUGH PATCH: Omaha starter Clay Mortensen allowed seven earned runs in 38.1 innings to start off his season (1.64 ERA) but in his last two starts he has given up 10 runs in 7.1 innings (12.27 ERA). He had gone five innings allowing two or less runs in each of his first six starts.
NOT THE BIG EASY: Omaha has now lost ten games against New Orleans in back-to-back seasons, which is tied for their most losses (also 2010) since PCL Division Realignment in 2005.
CHECK THE RECORD: Johnny Giavotella has joined the all-time top ten in Omaha history earlier this season in RBI (currently ranks 7th at 231) and hits (currently ranks 9th at 468 hits), but he is two runs shy of 10th place all-time with 222 runs (Joe Vitiello, 1994-99, ranks 10th at 224).
