THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia rallied to beat Rome 9-8 on Saturday night. The Braves scored three in the first, held a 5-2 lead after four and an 8-3 advantage after five innings. The Power plated two in the six inning on an error and a sac fly. In the seventh, the Power tied the game on a run-scoring ground out and a two-run single by Maximo Rivera. Erich Weiss walked to lead off the eighth, stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw. With Adam Landecker batting and two outs in the inning, a Michael Swanner wild pitch allowed Weiss to score the go-ahead run. Isaac Sanchez was the benefactor of the eighth inning run and earned the win while Brett McKinney tossed the final two frames for the win. West Virginia's leadoff batter reached in each of the first eight innings and scored six times.
WHEN IN ROME: West Virginia finishes its final long road trip of the season with three more games against the Rome Braves. The Power took two of three at Rome in late May and split a series last weekend in Charleston. West Virginia leads the all-time set 19-17 and has gone 9-11 at State Mutual Stadium since 2005.
NO LEAD IS SAFE: Saturday night rally marked the fourth time in the season series against the Braves that the Power have come from behind to win. In addition to coming back from five down last night, West Virginia has overcome a one-run deficit (May 28), a six-run margin (July 18) and a 7-0 hole on (July 21). The wins in the season series account for one third of the Power's 12 come-from-behind victories this season.
LONG GONE: Edwin Espinal's fourth inning home run Friday night was his first since June 27 against Lakewood at Appalachian Power Park. The Power first baseman went 99 at bats between home runs. During that stretch of 25 games, West Virginia's clean-up hitter drove in eight runs. Espinal's five home runs and 53 runs batted in are new career bests and the infielder now has a .282 average this season.
POWER DOWN: The 2014 edition of the West Virginia Power is on pace to hit franchise-low number of home runs. The 2011 club played 138 games and hit 63 home runs for an average of 0.46 home runs per game. The 2014 version has 44 long balls after 103 games, putting them on pace to hit 59 out this season (on a 0.43 per game average). The 2007 club finished with a franchise-record 128 home runs over 136 games (0.94 per game).
ONE LAST CHANCE: With Friday's win at Hickory, the Power still have not been swept in a complete season series by any team since the 2009 season. West Virginia had lost all nine games it had played against Hickory prior to Friday's victory. The last time a Power club was swept in a season series was from July 13 though 16 during the first year of the Pirates affiliation while playing a four game set at Augusta. West Virginia has never been swept in a season series longer than four games.
CLOSE CALLS: West Virginia is now 15-23 in one-run games, 5-10 in two-run finals, and 2-13 in games decided by three. Games decided by three runs or less account for 60% of the team's wins and 69% of their losses.
POWER PROMO UPDATE- AUGUST 2: The Power battle the Lexington Legends on Saturday, August 2 at Appalachian Power Park for Football Night. BirdZerk will perform during the game and the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a six-pack cooler sling.
POWER POINTS: Reese McGuire had his first three RBI game of the season on Friday night... Austin Meadows hitting streak was snapped at eight straight with an 0-3 performance Friday night. The outfielder hit .400 during his streak, which was one game shy of matching his career best (7/20/13-7/29/13 with the GCL Pirates)...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh dropped its second straight 8-1 final at Colorado. Jeff Locke surrendered six runs on ten hits... Indianapolis fell 1-0 in a walk-off at Rochester. Nate Hanson singled in Eric Farris in the ninth to give the Red Wings the win... Altoona obliterated Bowie 11-0 on 21 hits and a combined shutout from Zack Dodson, Joely Rodriguez and Ryan Beckman... Bradenton bested Lakeland 5-1. Eric Wood, Justin Howard and Justin Maffei had two hits each... Jamestown fell 4-2 at Batavia in a walk-off.
