De La Cruz Smacks Walk Off Single In 10th To Top Hops 2-1

July 27, 2014 - Northwest League (NWL1) - Vancouver Canadians News Release

(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, BC) It took until the final frame for either team to cross the plate, but the Canadians outlasted Hillsboro in nail-biting pitcher's duel, beating the Hops 2-1 to salvage their second win in the five-game series finale.

LF Chris Carlson played hero slicing a one-out RBI-double down the right field line to score DH Max Pentecost from second tying the game in the tenth. C Michael De La Cruz would provide the final blow two batters later with a hard hit ground ball passed the outstretched glove of a diving Hops SS Nate Robertson.

Hillsboro led off the tenth inning with their only extra-base hit as RF Steve Nyisztor launched a towering double of the top of the left field wall of off reliever LHP Yeyfrey Del Rosario. Nyisztor would advance on a wild pitch and score on a weak ground ball up the middle with the infield drawn in.

The C's twice had the bases loaded and on both occasions Pentecost made the final out of the inning. The first on a tailor-made double play ball, and the second on a line-drive scorched right at Hops SS Galli Cribbs Jr.

The Hops had their chances early as well putting the go-ahead run 90ft away in both the second and third innings but starter RHP Miguel Castro seemed to find another gear, striking out all four batters he would face with runners in scoring position.

The Canadians will pack the emphatic win with them in their suitcases as they head out on the road for a season-long 11-game trip. The C's now sit just one game back of Everett for the second-half division lead and will take on divisional rival Spokane for three games in their first series of the trip.
