Chihuahuas earn 8-7 win

July 27, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
El Paso Chihuahuas News Release

Rocky Gale's game-ending fielder's choice gave the El Paso Chihuahuas an 8-7 win over the Fresno Grizzlies Saturday night at Southwest University Park. The game had six lead changes, including both teams scoring a ninth inning run. Jake Goebbert went 3-for-4 with an RBI in his first game back from the San Diego Padres. Goebbert fell a home run shy of the cycle.

The Chihuahuas broke a 6-6 tie when Jedd Gyorko walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth. Fresno tied the game when Darren Ford scored from first on Gary Brown's single, which was mishandled by Rymer Liriano for the right fielder's first Triple-A error. In the bottom of the ninth, Goebbert led off with a double to left. After a sacrifice bunt and two intentional walks, Gale hit a ground ball to shortstop Ydwin Villegas, whose throw to the plate arrived after Goebbert slid in with the winning run.

Liriano went 2-for-4 and is now hitting .500 through his first four Triple-A games. San Diego shortstop Everth Cabrera went 2-for-4 and has a .353 average through the first six games of his injury rehab assignment. Saturday's win was the first time the Chihuahuas beat Fresno at Southwest University Park in six tries this season.
