Rattlers Hold on for 13-9 Victory over Hounds

July 26, 2014 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) - Charlotte Hounds News Release

The Charlotte Hounds on Saturday night dropped their third straight game, falling 13-9 to the first-place Rochester Rattlers (9-3) at Sahlen's Stadium. With the loss, the Hounds remain winless on the road in 2014, while the Rattlers remain undefeated on their home turf. Attack Jordan Wolf was named Player of the Game for his 7-point (5g, 2a) performance, while the Hounds were led by Justin Ward and Jake Tripucka, with three points each.

The Rattlers jumped out to an early lead, with two straight goals from Mark Cockerton and Dave Lawson. The teams traded goals and then were each hit with a penalty, as Ryan Young was called for slashing and Cockerton for an illegal stick violation. In five-on-five action, Tripucka was able to finish his shot as he was knocked to the ground to tie the game at 3. But Wolf quickly responded with his second of the night to give the Rattlers a 4-3 lead after one quarter.

Brendan Fowler won the opening faceoff of the second quarter, setting up a play in which Ward found Mike Sawyerworking his way from behind the cage to tie the game at 4. The Rattlers reclaimed the lead two minutes later as Lawson scored his second of the night from long range off a feed from Wolf. But Michael Lazore was hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, and John Haus capitalized on the man-up opportunity with a low-to-high shot. Haus then tallied what would have been the go-ahead goal for the Hounds, but Young was called for cross checking and the goal was waved off. The next eight minutes went scoreless before Jordan MacIntosh used a great individual effort to put the Rattlers back in front 6-5. But Tripucka scored his second of the night off a feed from Thomas DeNapoli to tie the game at 6 going into halftime.

The third quarter got off to a bit of a slow start before John Ranagan found Wolf down low to give the Rattlers a 7-6 advantage. Matt Danowski responded with a goal from behind the cage, but Ranagan made another great pass, this time to Justin Turri, who was able to dump the ball in the back of the net to put the home team back in front 8-7. Danowski and Wolf then traded goals, keeping the Rattlers ahead by one going into the final quarter.

Before the fourth quarter got underway, Sawyer was hit with an illegal equipment penalty, allowing the Rattlers an early man-up opportunity. Wolf scored his fifth of the night just as the penalty expired to give the home team a two goal advantage, 10-8. But Ward found Mike Chanenchuk just one minute later to pull the game back within one. The Hounds appeared to run out of gas though, as the Rattlers tallied three straight to close out the game - including two from Kevin Leveille - and seal a 13-9 victory.

The Hounds (4-8) return to Charlotte on Friday, Aug. 1 for a rematch with the New York Lizards. The Lizards (7-4) face the Chesapeake Bayhawks on Sunday afternoon. In their first game during Week 8, the Lizards squeaked out a 14-12 victory over the Hounds. The Friday night contest will be played at American Legion Memorial Stadium with faceoff scheduled for 7:00pm ET. Tickets are available at charlottehounds.com/tickets.
