Ohio Machine Outlasts Denver Outlaws in Overtime

July 26, 2014 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) - Ohio Machine News Release

In the second overtime matchup in as many games at Selby Stadium, the Ohio Machine beat the Denver Outlaws 23-22 in the highest scoring game in club history.

With the Machine (6-6) trailing 22-21 and less than just over two minutes to play, Machine attackman Marcus Holman tallied his fourth goal of the final quarter to tie the game. That score took the Machine and Outlaws into overtime where both club's had a chance.

Machine midfielder Kyle Harrison ended up tallying a laser from just inside the 2-point line to seal the Machine's move to a .500 record.

Ohio's 23 goals marked a club record, while Holman and attackman Logan Schuss each tied the Machine single-game record with five goals apiece.

The Outlaws opened the game with three straight goals, but the momentum shifted after a one-hour, 15-minute lightning delay.

Schuss scored less than two minutes after the delay ended to spark the turnaround, leading to a back-and-forth opening quarter. The game went into the break tied at four.

Denver opened the second quarter with a pair of goals before Machine attackman Steele Stanwick picked up his second to make it 6-5 in favor of the visitors. The Outlaws added two more before a pair of Machine goals -- including midfielder Peter Baum's 30th of the season. The game went back and forth before Denver finished the half up 12-9.

The third quarter opened with a pair of goals from each team before Eric Law put Denver ahead, 15-11. The Machine followed up with five goals in a row to take its first lead since the first quarter, but the Outlaws answered back to take a 17-16 advantage into the fourth.

After a Denver goal, Holman scored two straight, including the fourth shorthanded goal in club history, to tie the game at 18. Denver picked up two goals split by Holman's third of the quarter, but Machine face-off man Bobby Dattilo picked up a goal to tie it at 20. Stanwick polished off his hat trick to give Ohio a 21-20 lead. A pair of Denver goals followed by Holman's fifth forced overtime for just the second time in Machine home-game history.

Dattilo won the opening face-off of the extra period, but the Machine failed to capitalize. Eventually Ohio got another chance after a key save from goalie Brian Phipps and Harrison put the game firmly in Machine history.

After Holman and Schuss, Harrison finished with four goals while Baum and Stanwick each had three. All 11 of Harrison's shots were on target as he picked up game MVP honors.

Phipps finished the game with 11 saves on 33 shots on goal and one groundball. Dattilo went 19-for-25 at the midfield X and picked up a club-record 12 ground balls. Fellow face-off man Eric O'Brien had a strong night as well, going 12-of-21 on face-offs and tallying seven ground balls and one assist.

Schuss and Denver's Justin Pennington each had four goals in the first half. Alexander's shorthanded assist was just the second such assist in team history.

Pennington and John Grant Jr. led the Outlaws with five goals each while Chris Bocklet added four in the loss.

The Machine will travel to Rochester, N.Y., to take on the Rochester Rattlers August 2 at 7 p.m. before heading back to Delaware, Ohio, to close out the regular season. Ohio will host the Florida Launch on Fan Appreciation Night on August 9 at 7 p.m. for the final regular season home game of 2014 at Selby Stadium. Both games will be broadcast on the Major League Lacrosse YouTube Network.
