San Antonio Missions News Release

TONIGHT'S GAME: Tonight is game three of a four-game series between the San Antonio Missions and the Frisco Rough- Riders at Dr Pepper Ballpark. The teams have split their first 22 meetings this season, with the home teams going 15-7. San Antonio (18-17, 54-51), which saw their five-game win streak come to an end last night, enters play third in the South Division, second-half standings, three games behind first-place Midland (21-14, 59-46). Both teams have played well of late, each winning six of their last 10 games. Last night's win combined with Midland's loss in Corpus Christi gives Frisco (19-16, 59-45) once again the Texas League's best overall record. The RoughRiders have played exceptionally well at home this season, winning seven of 10 against the Missions and enter play with a record of 31-21 overall. Frisco is just two games back of Midland in the second-half standings.

PITCHING MATCHUP: On the hill for the Missions tonight is right-hander Joe Ross, who will be making his first start at the Double-A level. The 21-year-old hurler made his debut in relief on July 21 vs. Corpus Christi, earning the win with six innings of three-run, seven-hit ball. Ross fanned five Hooks that night and did not allow a walk, throwing 57 of his 77 pitches for strikes. The Berkeley, CA native began his 2014 season at High-A Lake Elsinore, where he went 8-6 with a 3.98 ERA and a K:BB ratio of 87:28 in 101.2 innings (19 starts). San Diego selected Joe in the 1st round (25th overall) of the 2011 First- Year Player Draft out of Bishop O'Dowd High School in Oakland, CA. Joe is the younger brother of Padres' All-Star pitcher, Tyson Ross. He entered the season as the No. 10 prospect in the San Diego system according to Baseball America. Frisco will counter with fellow righty Alec Asher, who is 8-9 with a 3.86 ERA in 20 starts this season. In four starts vs.

San Antonio, Asher is 1-3 with a 3.86 ERA and a K:BB ratio of 18:7 over 23.1 innings. Asher is coming off a terrific outing on July 21 at Midland, where he allowed just one run on five hits and one walk, while striking out four over a season-high seven and a third innings.

LAST GAME: San Antonio wasted an early three-run lead as they fell to Frisco 7-4 Friday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark.

The loss snapped the Missions' five-game win streak as well as their three-game streak vs. the RoughRiders. San Antonio got out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first on Hunter Renfroe's RBI double down the left-field line off starter Alex Claudio.

The Missions pushed their lead to three an inning later on Cory Spangenberg's two-run single. Frisco promptly erased the lead, however, scoring a run in the second and two more in the third on Joey Gallo's 14th homer (MiLB-leading 35th overall). San Antonio regained the lead at 4-3 in the seventh, courtesy of Adam Buschini's run-producing ground out. After tying the score again in the bottom of the frame, Frisco once again used to long ball to take the lead for good. With two on and two out in the bottom of the eighth, J.T. Wise broke the four-all tie by taking Michael Dimock (1-5) deep to left. It was Wise's first homer as a member of the RoughRiders. Kyle Lotzkar (3-2) picked up the win in relief for the 'Riders, while Will Lamb notched his third save with a perfect ninth.

HOMER HAPPY: San Antonio has hit 86 homers in 2014, which is the 5th most at the Double-A level. The Missions have out-homered their opponents by 27 this season and have a 49-38 edge on the road. San Antonio leads the Texas League in homers by eight. They have not led the TL in the category since 1992 when they hit 92. Last season, the Missions had just 69 homers through July.

OFFENSE IGNITED: The Missions got off to a 5-12 start in July thanks primarily to their inability to score runs. In those 17 games, San Antonio scored just 60 runs (3.5 RPG). During their last six contests, the club has scored 42 runs, tied for the 4th -most among all full-season MiLB squads. The Missions have scored 12 runs in this series after scoring just 17 runs in their first eight games this year at Dr Pepper Ballpark.

ON A TEAR: Spangenberg's 3-for-5 last night extended his hitting streak to a club, season-high 11 games. During his streak, Cory is batting a sizzling .438 (21-for-48), which is the 4th -best AVG at the Double-A level. Since his July 2 return from the DL, Spangenberg is hitting .388 (38-for-98) with eight doubles, two triples, a homer, seven RBI, 17 runs scored and six steals. During that stretch he is 1st in the TL in AVG, hits and total bases with 53. He's also 2nd in both doubles and OPS at .969, T-2nd in both runs and triples and is 4th in extra-base hits with 11. Incredibly, he has 15 MGH in the 23 he's played in since returning to San Antonio, including six in a row. Spangenberg has hit safely in 28 of his 35 games this season for the Missions. In addition to his hit streak, Cory has scored at least one run in seven straight games.

HAHN DAZZLES AGAIN: Former Mission right-hander Jesse Hahn picked up right where he left off in his return to the Padres' rotation. Last night, Hahn (6-2) guided San Diego to a 5-2 win over Atlanta at Turner Field, with six innings of one- run, three-hit ball. Since June 14 (seven starts), Hahn leads the National league in wins with six, in addition to ranking 2nd in ERA at 1.47 (7 ER/43 IP), 3rd in OPP AVG at .162 and T-6th in WHIP at 0.95.
