Spinners Game Notes ()

July 26, 2014 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Lowell Spinners News Release

The Spinners look to make it two in a row with Heri Quevedo on the mound for a 5:05 first pitch.

S P I N - N O T E S:

Baby Steps: Playing with purple and white March of Dimes themed jerseys to promote healthy babies, the Spinners took baby steps forward, snapping their three-game losing streak with a 7-4 win over the Hudson Valley Renegades Friday night...The game was not as close as the final score indicated, as the Renegades scored three runs over the final two innings against RHP Kuehl McEachern to pull the score a bit closer.

Wilkerson Cruises : For the first time this season a Spinners starting pitcher went longer than six innings as RHP Aaron Wilkerson continued to impress since joining the Spinners, throwing seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits and a walk, striking out six...In two starts, Wilkerson has now earned the win in each outing, allowing just two runs over 13 innings, striking out 13 while allowing just seven hits.

Betts Leads the Way : 3B Jordan Betts continued his hot hitting, powering the Spinners to their early lead with a double, home run and five RBI in the game ' s first three innings...Betts is now riding an eight-game hitting streak, with hits in 10-of-11 games...Betts is currently the team leader in home runs (6), doubles (10) and RBI (24), ranking third on the team in batting average (.302).

Travis Streak Snapped: It appeared the Hudson Valley Renegades did not want to see 1B Sam Travis extend his hitting streak, as the slugging first baseman was hit in each of his first two trips to the plate...Travis struck-out in his final two plate appearances, snapping his hitting streak at 10-games.

Double Digit Hits: For the first time in franchise history, the Spinners have recorded double-digit hits in six consecutive games following Friday night ' s 13-hit performance...The bats have not been the problem for the Spinners, as the Spinners are tied for second in the New York-Penn League with a .266 team average...The franchise record for a team batting average came in 2005, when the team finished with a .261 average.

Quevedo Rolling : After a terrible start to the season, RHP Heri Quevedo saw his roster status change from rehab assignment to active roster ... Quevedo has responded well since, earning the win in each of his last two outings with nearly identical five inning, two run performances...Quevedo struck out a season-high eight batters July 16 at Batavia and followed with six strikeouts August 21 at Auburn.

Post-Game Correction : Following the game SS Mauricio Dubon was awarded a second hit, as official scorer Greg Royce made the decision to reverse a call he had made earlier in the night...In the third inning, SS Alec Sole charged Dubon ' s slow chopper...He wasn ' t able to pick the ball cleanly and the official scorer ruled that even a clean pick the play wouldn ' t have resulted in an out at first, thus giving Dubon a hit.

Another Triple: C Alixon Suarez had an eighth inning RBI triple, his second of the season and the team ' s 18th of the season...With 35 games to go, the franchise record for triples is within the Spinners sights, as the 2004 squad had a franchise record 28 triples.

Tough Night for Mars : Though OF Danny Mars finished the game 1-for-5 with a stolen base, but Mars had a home run call overturned in the first inning and then in his second at-bat, earned a walk, but was not awarded first base...Apparently the umpires were unaware it was Danny Mars Poster Night.
