Kelowna Falcons' Comeback Falls Short

July 26, 2014 - West Coast League (WCL)
Kelowna Falcons News Release

Friday night, the Kelowna Falcons showed great fight scoring three runs in the final three innings, but it wasn't enough as the Yakima Valley Pippins held on for a 7-5 victory.

Similar to the first series between these two clubs in June, the Pippins scored three times in the top of the first inning to set the tone. Vince Fernandez clubbed a three run homer off starter Aaron Mason. It was Fernandez's third homer off Falcons pitching and ninth RBI in four games this season.

The Falcons responded scoring twice in the first two innings. Brandon Grimsley hit an RBI triple in the first while Ryan Degner doubled home Trey Kamachi in the second.

After the Pippins scored a pair in both the fifth and sixth innings, the Falcons come back was on. Jerod Smith connected for a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh. Unfortunately he and Josh Croft were stranded in scoring position. Then in the eighth inning Smith knocked in Nick Minteer, for his third RBI of the season. That's as close as the Falcons would come.

Mason lasted 5.1 innings, allowing seven runs on 11 hits and struck out two. He suffers his first loss of the season. Brandon Lambright was very good out of the bullpen. He threw 3.2 shutout innings, striking out eight.

The Falcons (13-27) and Pippins (23-17) will play game two on Saturday night at Elks Stadium. Scotland Church (0-1) will make his first start of the season. It's also Retro Beer Night; fans can take advantage of some great deals all night long. The gates open at 5:30pm, first pitch at 6:35pm.
