Blaze Lose 11-4 on Gaffes

July 26, 2014 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

Three early errors by the Bakersfield Blaze set the tone, and the Lake Elsinore Storm, brimming with confidence, smacked the Blaze around for 11 runs on 15 hits, dispatching Bakersfield 11-4 in the second game of a four game set down south, and splitting the first two games.

While Bakersfield was unable to bring their baserunners home, the Storm capitalized early, and often off starter Daniel Wright (L, 6-4).

Mallex Smith began the Storm assault with a solo homer to begin the 1st, but the 2nd turned out to be the key frame. Wright, struggling a bit with command, issued a rare walk, and two singles loaded the bases. The inning turned, though, on a groundball. The Blaze were thinking double play, and an error ended up allowing two runs to score. Elsinore added one more, and led 4-0.

Bakersfield got on the board in the 4th when Sean Buckley launched his sixth homer of the year, a solo shot over the foul pole off Colin Rea (W, 9-5).

But the Storm roared back with two in each of the next two innings on a double, two singles, and a missed tag on a baserunner in the 4th, and two errors and a homer in the 5th, and the Blaze found themselves down 8-1.

The hit parade for the Storm continued after the Blaze went to the pen, adding another in the 6th for runs in every inning besides the 3rd.

But Bakersfield chipped a bit closer down the stretch. Brian Pearl held the Storm at bay, and the Blaze got an RBI single from Beau Amaral and a booming solo homer from Sebastian Elizalde, cutting the deficit to six. But they would get no closer, as the Storm scored twice in the 8th off Sean Lucas to go up 11-3.

The final run came in the 9th when the Blaze got 3 walks and a wild pitch.

The Blaze and Storm butt heads again on Saturday in our second of the back-to-back Games of the Week. That contest begins at 6:05pm, one hour earlier, so make sure to set your clocks accordingly, as Ismael Guillon takes a stab at the Storm for Bakersfield, and Lake Elsinore counters with newly acquired Rafael De Paula.

Fans can also listen to every moment live on Saturday night as Dan Besbris brings the call on radio and internet five minutes before first pitch. Check in locally on SmartTalk AM-1230 or globally via BakersfieldBlaze.com and TuneIn Radio.
