PawSox Reach 10 Straight with 10-2 Win

July 25, 2014 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

(Moosic, PA) Pawtucket sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight two-out runs in the fourth while starter Anthony Ranaudo tossed six shutout innings to become the IL's first 12-game winner as the PawSox set a franchise record by recording their tenth-straight victory, a 10-2 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders Friday night at PNC Field.

The ten-game winning streak for Pawtucket (60-48) breaks the previous modern-day record of nine in a row, which was accomplished six times prior to 2014. The squad has outscored opponents 63-27 during the stretch and is now 9-0 since the All-Star break. With Syracuse losing against Gwinnett, the PawSox moved within 1.5 games of the North Division-leading Chiefs (61-46). Pawtucket trailed by 8.5 games before the winning streak began.

With Pawtucket leading 2-0 in the fourth, Scranton starter Matt Tracy (1-3) recorded the first two outs. The next 10 batters would reach on six hits, three walks and a crucial strikeout-passed ball on catcher John Ryan Murphy. The passed ball, coming on a swinging strike three by Jonathan Herrera, would have ended the inning without any runs scoring had it been caught. All eight runs in the frame were unearned.

Ryan Roberts followed Herrera with a three-run blast (6) to left against Tracy that put Pawtucket in front 5-0. Later in the inning reliever Danny Burawa walked Deven Marrero with the bases loaded to drive home the sixth run, then Alex Hassan (two-run single), Corey Brown (RBI infield single) and Mookie Betts (RBI single) collected consecutive hits to make it 10-0.

Ranaudo (12-4) had little problem with the RailRiders top-ranked offense, allowing only three hits and two walks in his six innings of work. The right-hander struck out four and lowered his earned run average to 2.41 (2nd-best in the IL). Drake Britton (2.0 innings, four hits, two runs) and John Ely (1.0 inning, one hit, no runs) finished the record-breaking win.

Betts, who collected two hits in the fourth inning alone, finished 4-for-5 with a walk, a double, two runs scored and one RBI. Travis Shaw (2-for-5, two doubles) was the only other Pawtucket player with multiple hits, while Roberts (3 RBI), Marrero (two RBI) and Hassan (two RBI) each had multi-RBI nights.

Game two of the four-game series is scheduled for Saturday night with first pitch at 7:05 pm, as Pawtucket looks for its 11th-consecutive win. Right-hander Allen Webster (4-4, 3.10) is slated to start for the PawSox against Scranton righty Bruce Billings (4-5, 4.94). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:50 pm.

Following the eight-game road trip and a subsequent day off, the PawSox return to McCoy Stadium for a seven-game homestand that begins on Wednesday July 30. The stand features three games against Syracuse and four with Columbus. Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
