Altavilla Earns First Win as AquaSox Take Game One

Everett AquaSox News Release

EVERETT, Wash . - Dan Altavilla had to wait eight starts, but the Seattle Mariners' fifth round pick in the 2014 MLB Draft finally got his first professional win. The right hander from Mercyhurst University in Pennsylvania turned in what was unquestionably his best performance of the season, tossing six innings of one-run ball to lead the Everett AquaSox to a 3-1 win in game one of a doubleheader with the Boise Hawks at Everett Memorial Stadium Friday.

Altavilla (1-2), who won the inaugural Brett Tomko Award as NCAA Division II's best pitcher in 2014 and was the first DII player taken in the draft, pitched masterfully as he set a new career-high in innings pitched and struck out five while allowing just four hits. The Greenock, PA native made only one mistake, a solo homer by Danny Canela in the top of the sixth, en route to his first victory in the professional ranks. In the seven-inning game, Altavilla gave way to Logan Bawcom, who worked the top of the seventh to earn his first save with the AquaSox.

Everett only managed three runs, but it was more than enough with Altavilla cruising on the mound. The AquaSox plated their first run in the second when they loaded the bases with two outs and Austin Cousino drew a walk to force in Jordan Cowan.

Everett tallied two more runs in the third. Kyle Petty led off the inning by wearing a fastball from Hawks starter Trevor Graham. Corey Simpson followed by lacing an RBI double down the left field line that scored Petty from first.

Simpson would be doubled off second for the second out of the inning, but Kristian Brito crushed a solo homer to right field off Graham to put the AquaSox ahead 3-0. The homer was Brito's second of the season.

Everett had six hits in the game, two of them coming off the bat of Brito as Graham (3-3) threw all six innings for Boise. Graham allowed three runs, two of them earned, and walked three while striking out five. Canela was 2-3 for the Hawks, including his fifth homer for Boise this year.

Game two of Friday's doubleheader at Everett Memorial Stadium between the AquaSox (13-28 overall, 2-1 second half) and Hawks (23-18, 1-2) is set to start at approximately 8:10 pm. Ramire Cleto (1-2, 4.54) will make his first start for Everett since June 30. Tyler Ihrig (4-1, 4.50) of Monroe, WA, gets the start for Boise.
