Rock Cats Pitching Staff Sharp; Portland Sneaks by 1-0

New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats fell on the wrong side of a 1-0 pitcher's duel on Friday evening at New Britain Stadium.

Rock Cats RHP Adrian Salcedo was tabbed for the spot start earlier in the afternoon after LHP Jason Wheeler was promoted up to Triple-A Rochester. The hard-throwing righty did a fine job limiting the Sea Dogs offense to just one run - a sacrifice fly by 2B Sean Coyle in the top of the third - over three innings of work. Salcedo did make one start for New Britain prior to Friday's start, getting the nod back on July 7th against New Hampshire.

Portland starter LHP Brian Johnson looked very sharp - striking out 12 Rock Cats batters in seven innings pitched, a career-high mark. One of Portland's five All-Stars over in Altoona, PA just a few weeks ago, Johnson controlled the game very well, allowing no runs on one hit while walking three. The southpaw improves his record to 9-2.

Manager Jeff Smith rolled out four relievers over the course of six innings in the bullpen game, combining for zero runs on five hits while walking one and striking out eight.

Portland C Blake Swihart led the Sea Dogs offense on the night, collecting three hits on the night.

Saturday evening's game will see Rock Cats RHP Tyler Duffey match up against Portland starter RHP Wilfredo Boscan.
