Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Close But No Cigar
Despite superb pitching from RHP Tanner Chleborad and reliever LHP Matt Trowbridge, the IronBirds lost to the Connecticut Tigers in the final inning of a close game. The IronBirds got on the board first thanks to an error at first, and then padded their lead to two with a booming LF Jamill Moquete homer, giving him his second in the last three games. The Tigers tied it up in the fourth with a two-run inning. After that it was all pitching. Trowbridge came in and struck out five out of the seven batters he faced before being relieved by RHP Matthew Grimes. After the fourth, neither team could muster a run and could only manage a handful of hits, but in the top of the ninth the Tigers lead-off man got on base and he was eventually hit around to third when he eventually scored the go-ahead run. The Tigers lead and eventual win was then set in stone after 2B Brett Pirtle blasted a two-run shot into right field.
That's Chleborad with a 'K'
RHP Tanner Chleborad made his fourth and longest appearance for the IronBirds last night. In his five innings, Chleborad let up only five hits and two runs while recording two K's for an ERA of 2.13. A particularly impressive inning for Chleborad was in the top of the second when Chleborad had men on first and third with no outs. He then retired the next three batters without giving up any more runs. In the fourth, however, Chleborad found himself in the same exact situation but ended up giving up two runs. Despite that inning and signs of fatigue, Chelborad stayed in and retired the side the next inning before being relieved by Trowbridge.
Batting Struggles Resurface
The IronBirds could only muster five hits throughout the entire game, marking the second time in nine games that the IronBirds had that many hits. In their two games with Brooklyn before the Tigers came into town, the IronBirds racked up 22 hits total between those two games.
On the Mound Tonight...
IronBirds ace Bennett Parry will start the game for the IronBirds tonight. One could argue that he has been their most solid and consistent pitcher in the rotation. In his 19.2 innings pitched, Parry has collected a 2-0 record - the best on the team - while earning a second-best 1.37 ERA. Parry has allowed only 14 hits, four runs (three earned), one home run and has struck out 22 batters in his five games.
