Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM DASH (17-18, 47-57) at WILMINGTON BLUE ROCKS (17-15, 50-50)

RHP Tony Bucciferro (7-9, 4.01 ERA) vs. RHP Miguel Almonte (5-5, 2.60 ERA)

7:05 p.m. - Frawley Stadium (Wilmington, Del.) Game #105 (Road Game #52)

P-NATS OUTLAST DASH TO AVOID SWEEP In a contest that did not conclude until 12:08 a.m. Friday, the Potomac Nationals nipped the Dash 9-6 in an 11-inning marathon in front of 5,485 fans at BB&T Ballpark. Rain delayed first pitch 87 minutes, and offense was frequent early in the contest. Winston plated at least a run in four of the first five innings. Potomac knotted the score with two unearned runs in the seventh before winning it in the 11th thanks to a Shawn Pleffner two-run double and an Oscar Tejeda RBI single. The Nationals' bullpen held Winston to just one run on three hits in 8.1 innings.

THE START AFTER Tony Bucciferro will make his first start since a historic effort at Frederick on Sunday, when the right-hander took a no-hitter into the ninth inning of a 5-0 win. With one out in the frame, Glynn Davis laced a first-pitch single over the glove of Nick Basto at third base. He settled for the fifth nine-inning complete game shutout from a Winston hurler in the Dash era (2009-present).

NEAR MISS Bucciferro fell two outs shy of the first no-hitter by a Dash hurler since June 19, 2009 (Levi Maxwell at Wilmington). The franchise has not seen a nine-inning no-hitter since four pitchers combined on the gem against Myrtle Beach on April 15, 2001. Bucciferro finished agonizingly close to Winston-Salem's first solo, nine-inning no-hitter since Bill Kazmierczak accomplished the feat on May 20, 1988, when the club was called the Spirits. There have been 14 no-hitters in the 101 years of baseball in Winston-Salem.

TWO FOR ONCE Winston-Salem catcher Michael Marjama had a huge game in the losing effort Thursday. Not only did he launch his first home run since June 7, but the Granite Bay, Calif., native also set a career high with three runs scored. Marjama had not driven in two runs in a game before this contest. In nine games this month, Marjama is hitting .394 (13-for-33) with seven runs scored.

WELCOME TO WILMINGTON For the first time since mid-April, the Dash are invading Frawley Stadium to square off with the Blue Rocks, who have a slight edge in the season series. Wilmington has won seven of 13 meetings in 2014 after the Dash posted identical 15-5 records against the CL's northernmost club in 2012 and 2013. In their first trip to the First State, the Dash lost three of four, during which Winston-Salem mustered just two runs. In the first half of that series, the Dash suffered back-to-back shutout losses for the first time since August 23-24, 2009. Before this set, Winston had won 19 of its previous 26 in Wilmington.

EIGHT IS GREAT Dash third baseman Nick Basto is riding an eight-game hitting streak since July 14. During this spurt, his longest of the season, Basto is hitting .375 (12-for-32) with two homers, five RBIs and six runs scored. Before this surge, the Davie, Fla., native was hitting just .147 (5-for-34) in his first 10 games back with Winston-Salem after a stint on the disabled list.

THERE'S THE GLOVE The Dash committed four errors on Thursday after only three in their previous five contests. Overall this season, the Dash have made 158 defensive miscues, which are second to Fort Wayne (Low-A, San Diego) in Minor League Baseball (170). Winston-Salem does pace the Minor Leagues in unearned runs with 127, four of which came around on Thursday. The Dash have recorded at least one defensive blunder in 79 of their 104 games (76 percent).

DASH DOTS For just the second time in 17 games, Winston-Salem dropped a home game when scoring six-plus runs...The Dash own the Carolina League's worst road record (21-30)...Winston-Salem left seven runners on base in the first three innings Thursday night...Outfielder Jacob May leads the circuit with 37 stolen bases, 29 of which have come since June 1.
