Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Potomac Nationals scored three runs in the top of the 11th inning, avoiding a sweep with a 9-6 win over Winston-Salem in front of 5,485 fans at BB&T Ballpark on Thursday night.

Potomac (17-15, 55-46) took advantage of some wildness by Dash reliever Jefferson Olacio (0-5), who had logged two scoreless innings before the deciding 11th. Justin Miller and Tony Renda walked to open the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Stephen Perez moved the runners to second and third. Shawn Pleffner's go-ahead double down the left field line plated Miller and Renda and Oscar Tejeda's single to left scored Pleffner to make it a 9-6 contest.

The Dash (17-18, 47-57) tried to make one final push against P-Nats reliever Gilberto Mendez (6-3) in the bottom of the 11th. Courtney Hawkins muscled a single to center field, but Jason Coats' fly out to right fielder Estarlin Martinez just after midnight ended the tilt, as Potomac salvaged one win in the three-game sweep.

Winston-Salem opened the scoring in the see-saw affair in the bottom of the first inning. Jacob May started the rally with a bunt single against Potomac starter Matthew Spann and advanced to second on a throwing error by the third baseman Tejeda. Hawkins moved May to third with a single and Coats chased the Dash leadoff hitter home with a base hit up the middle, giving the home team a 1-0 lead.

Potomac answered in the top of the second against Winston-Salem right-hander J.B. Wendelken. Tejeda got things going with an infield hit, then hustled to third on Randolph Oduber's double. Both men came home when Mike McQuillan rolled a double down the first base line, providing the P-Nats with a 2-1 advantage.

The Dash struck back in the bottom of the second. Grant Buckner and Michael Marjama singled to start the frame. Cleuluis Rondon walked to load the bases. May reached on an error by the shortstop Perez, scoring Buckner. An RBI groundout by Keenyn Walker put his club back in front, 3-2.

Winston-Salem provided some more offense in the third. Nick Basto doubled to extend his hitting streak to eight games and advanced to third on Buckner's second hit of the contest. An error by Spann allowed Basto to race home. Later in the inning, Walker drew a bases loaded walk to make it a 5-2 game.

Potomac drew closer in the fifth. Estarlin Martinez reached on a catcher's interference and Craig Manuel singled, placing runners at the corners. Cody Dent's grounder resulted in an error by Basto, plating Martinez. Perez's sacrifice fly scored Manuel to cut the deficit to 5-4.

The Dash got a run back in the bottom-half of the inning. Marjama blasted a solo homer over the left field wall against Nationals' reliever Richie Mirowski. Marjama's third round-tripper of the season provided Winston-Salem a 6-4 edge.

The P-Nats tied the contest in the sixth against reliever Sean Hagan. Dent singled and Renda doubled, setting up runners at second and third with two outs. Perez's tapper near the mound resulted in a throwing error by Hagan, allowing Dent and Renda to score, evening the game at 6-6 and eventually bringing about extra innings.

The contest began with a rain delay of one hour and 26 minutes.

The Dash hit the road for a three-game series against Wilmington, beginning Friday. Winston-Salem will send right-hander Tony Bucciferro (7-9, 4.01 ERA) to the mound, while the Blue Rocks counter with righty Miguel Almonte (5-6, 4.96 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
