Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners rode an early wave of momentum and three RBIs in the first two innings by Frank Martinez to a 4-2 win over the Washington Wild Things on Thursday night at Rent One Park.
The Miners got on the board right away against Washington starter Scott Dunn (4-3), as Marquis Riley led off with a double and Ryan Cavan drove him in two pitches later for a 1-0 Miners lead in the first. Two batters later, Martinez drove Cavan home from second for a 2-0 lead.
In the second inning, Riley worked a walk and Niko Vasquez reached on an infield single with two outs. Martinez then struck a double off the right field fence to double the Southern Illinois advantage to 4-0 in the second.
Michael Carden (2-3) took over from there, giving up just one earned run over five and two-thirds innings to earn his first win since May 30th, a span of eight starts that included four straight no-decisions entering the game on Thursday. Derrick Miramontes came on for his 15th save, striking out two in a perfect ninth in the victory.
The top four batters in the order did the damage for Southern Illinois, as Riley, Cavan, Vasquez and Martinez all had two hits in the contest. Cavan extended his streak of getting on base to 25 games in a row, the longest active streak in the Frontier League, and Vasquez went 2-for-2 with three walks, reaching base every time he came to bat in his Miners debut after being acquired in a trade with the Gateway Grizzlies. Riley had two runs scored as well as a double as the Miners won their 11th series opener at home in 12 total series this season.
The Miners will go for the series win tomorrow, with Tyler Lavigne taking on the Wild Things' Zac Fuesser at 7:05 p.m.
