Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL - Ty Nelson bounced a two-run single up the middle with two outs in the last of the eighth, giving the Schaumburg Boomers an 11-10 win over the Traverse City Beach Bums in a wild back-and-forth affair on Thursday night at Boomers Stadium.

Traverse City opened up the scoring in the top of the third inning with four runs to take a 4-0 lead. Jeff DeBlieux led off the frame with a triple and scored on an infield single from Rob Benedict. Two batters later, Jose Vargas blasted a two-run homer, his third of the year, to make it 3-0. Jovan Rosa followed with a solo shot of his own, his fifth, marking the first time Traverse City has hit back-to-back jacks this year.

Alexi Colon got a run back for Schaumburg with a two-out solo homer in the last of the third, but that was countered by Yazy Arbelo smacking a solo shot to lead off the fifth inning, making it 5-1 Traverse City. It was Arbelo's 12th homer of the year and his second in as many nights.

Schaumburg then rallied for a big inning in the sixth. The first five batters reached on five singles, only two of which left the infield, to draw the Boomers to within 5-4. Casey Delgado would retire the next two batters before Mark Nelson reached on an error, which enabled the tying run to score. After another infield single, Jordan Dean blasted a grand slam to left to complete an eight-run frame and put the Boomers on top 9-5.

Delgado ended up being charged with the nine runs, only three of which were earned due to two errors. He took a no-decision while striking out six hitters in 5.2 innings.

The Beach Bums weren't done though, rallying to take the lead in the eighth inning. Scott Woodward connected on Traverse City's season-high fourth home run of the night, a three-run shot with two outs to cut the deficit to 9-8. A walk and an error put two on for Arbelo, who sliced a double down the left field line that scored both runners to make it 10-9 in favor of the Beach Bums. Arbelo was one of seven Beach Bums on the night that finished with multiple hits.

However, Schaumburg had one last rally in them, loading the bases with one out against Ryan Brasser. Scott Vachon came on for TC and got a pop out for the second out of the inning. He then got to a full count on Nelson, who slapped the eventual game-winning single up the middle to score two, giving Schaumburg the 11-10 advantage.

Dester Price (3-4) ended up picking up the win for Schaumburg despite blowing the save in the eighth inning. He wasn't charged with a run in 1.1 frames. Brasser (0-3) took the loss for TC by giving up two runs on two hits in one-third of an inning.

Traverse City and Schaumburg will look to match the excitement in the middle game of the three-game series on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET. Rusty Shellhorn (4-1, 3.28) will start for the Beach Bums against the Boomers Danny Jimenez (4-3, 3.69). Fans can listen to the broadcast starting at 7:15 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
