Seventh Inning Simmers B-Mets in 6-5 Loss

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets gave up three runs in the seventh inning en route to a 6-5 loss to the Trenton Thunder on Wednesday night at Arm & Hammer Park. Dilson Herrera extended his hitting streak to 12 games in the loss. He has a hit in 23 of his last 24 outings.

Trenton drew first blood in the bottom of the first against Tyler Pill. Jake Cave laced a one-out double down the right-field line. Gary Sanchez brought him home with a bloop single to center field to put Trenton on top 1-0.

The B-Mets left a runner in scoring position in each of the first three frames, but finally came through in the fourth against Luis Severino. Dustin Lawley started things with a walk and moved to third on a double by T.J. Rivera. Jayce Boyd brought Lawley home on an RBI ground out to tie the game. With two outs, Xorge Carrillo singled home Rivera to put Binghamton on top, 2-0.

The Thunder came right back in the bottom of the inning. After Pill had sent down ten straight batters, Tyler Austin launched a pitch more than 400 feet to center field to tie the game at two.

The back-and-forth play continued in the fifth against Cesar Cabral. Brandon Nimmo smacked his second double of the game to start things off. After a hit-by-pitch and a walk loaded the bases, Dustin Lawley came to the plate. He reached on a catcher's interference call against Gary Sanchez that brought a run home to put the road team back on top. With one out, Boyd hit a sacrifice fly to center field that plated Brian Burgamy to make the score 4-2.

Trenton cut into the lead in the bottom of the frame. Pill issued back-to-back walks to Dan Fiorito and Casey Stevenson to lead things off. Ali Castillo moved both runners up a bag with a sacrifice bunt. Ben Gamel came to the plate and grounded out to first, but a run scored on the play trim the Thunder deficit to 4-3.

The B-Mets added an insurance run in the seventh against Mark Montgomery. Dilson Herrera started the rally with a single and moved to second on a Burgamy walk. Rivera brought one run home with a one-out single to extend the Binghamton advantage to 5-3.

Things fell apart for the B-Mets in the seventh. Jack Leathersich came on in relief and gave up a single to Mason Williams. After two quick outs, Castillo singled to put runners on the corners. Gamel reached on an infield single and a run scored on the play after Leathersich misplayed a pass from Boyd at first. Sanchez came through with a single that drove in two runners to put Trenton on top for good 6-5.

Neither starter factored in the decision. Pill went six innings, gave up three runs and tied a season high with nine strikeouts. Severino tossed four innings of two-run ball and struck out seven batters. Francisco Rondon (1-1) shut down the B-Mets over the final 2.2 innings and struck out two. Leathersich (1-3) was tacked with this third blown save of the year. Adam Kolarek worked a scoreless eighth in relief.

The B-Mets (61-43) plays game two of their four-game set on Friday at 7:05 PM. RHP Matt Bowman takes the hill for the B-Mets opposite LHP Dan Camarena for the Thunder. POSTGAME NOTES: Pill also struck out nine batters on June 19 against Richmond...He hasn't taken a loss since May 5...Nimmo and Rivera each tallied three hits in the loss
