Canadians Drop First Game Of Double Header
July 24, 2014 - Northwest League (NWL1) - Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, BC) The Hillsboro offense continued its strong second half start, scoring five in a seven-hit fifth inning to win the first half of a Thursday night double header 7-3 at Nat Bailey Stadium.
The Canadians rallied from an early deficit to take the lead 3-2 through four innings, but LHP Tim Mayza would struggle mightily in his second inning of relief after completing a three-up, three-down inning in the fourth.
The Hops tied the game in the first at bat of the fifth, as 3B Taylor Ard launched a solo home run over the left field wall to lead things off. Mayza would allow four straight singles, followed by a double before retiring his first batter with the C's down 6-3. With two away, another well-hit single would cash yet another Hops run putting an end to Mayza's day, handing him his third loss of the season.
Vancouver would tie a season-high, allowing 13 hits in the abbreviated seven-inning game, while opposing pitcher RHP Scott Schultz earned the win in his longest professional outing, allowing just three runs on eight hits in his 6.2 innings, before surrendering to the bullpen for the final out of the game.
The loss continues Vancouver's winless start to the second half keeping them a game and a half back of Everett while still searching for their first win. After a brief 30-minute reset both teams will renew the series in the back-end of tonight's double-header.
