San Antonio Missions Game Notes: July 24 at Frisco

July 24, 2014 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release

TONIGHT'S GAME: Tonight is the opener of a four-game series between the San Antonio Missions and the Frisco Rough- Riders at Dr Pepper Ballpark. The teams have split their first 20 matchups this season, with the home teams going 14-6. San Antonio (17-16, 53-50) enters play third in the South Division, second-half standings, three games behind first-place Midland (20-13, 58-45). A win tonight would extend the Missions' winning streak to five games, which would be their longest such run since a season-best six-game streak May 17-23. San Antonio is coming off their first sweep of Corpus Christi since the final series of the 2011 season. With their win last night at Midland, Frisco (18-15, 58-44) now owns the Texas League's best overall record. The RoughRiders have played exceptionally well at home this season, winning six of eight against the Missions and enter play with a record of 30-20 overall. San Antonio has scored just 17 runs in their eight games this season at Dr Pepper Ballpark, with Frisco pitching four shutouts.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Trying to keep San Antonio's win streak alive is right-hander Leonel Campos, who will be making his ninth start of the season. Campos is coming off a subpar outing on July 19 at Midland, where he allowed three runs on five hits and three walks in just three innings of work. The Valera, Venezuela native has struggled in July, pitching to a 7.62 ERA (11 ER/13 IP) over four starts. In his eight games (four starts) in June, Campos put up a minuscule 1.04 ERA to go along with a K:BB ratio of 21:7. Campos has fared well against Frisco this season, allowing just two runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out 12 over nine innings (four games, one start). On the hill for the first-half champion RoughRiders is fellow righty Jose Monegro, who just arrived from Class A Hickory. The 24-year-old hurler is 2-1 with a 3.89 ERA this season in 16 games (one start) across four different levels. He appeared in one game for Frisco early in the season on April 5 vs. Northwest Arkansas, allowing just one walk over one and a third shutout innings.

LAST GAME: Diego Goris' sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth lifted San Antonio to a thrilling, 5-4, come-from-behind win Wednesday night at Wolff Stadium. The Hooks took a quick lead Wednesday, when Tony Kemp led off the game with a homer to right off Missions' starter Justin Hancock. Two innings later, Corpus Christi pushed its lead to 4-0 with consecutive two-out, RBI singles by Conrad Gregor, Jonathan Meyer and Andrew Aplin. San Antonio had trouble managing much offense against Corpus Christi starter Brady Rodgers, who allowed just one run on one hit and one walk, while striking out three over four and a third innings. However, the Missions took advantage of Rodgers' exit in the fifth, cutting their deficit to just one against southpaw Luis Cruz. After Brian Bixler got San Antonio on the board with an RBI base knock to left center, Cory Spangenberg followed with a two-run single up the middle. The score remained the same until the bottom of the eight when the Missions tied the game on a key Hooks' error. Spangenberg ignited the rally with a one-out single, his third hit of the game. After Casey McElroy followed with a single of his own, Cruz got the second out of the frame when he induced Yeison Asencio to fly out to center. That brought up Hunter Renfroe, who hit a slow chopper to Kemp at second. Kemp fielded the ball cleanly, but his throw was dropped by shortstop Ruben Sosa, allowing Spangenberg to score all the way from second. After Luis De La Cruz (5-8) put up a zero in the top of the ninth, the Missions went back on the attack in their half. Adam Buschini got things started with a leadoff single. Cruz (7-6) responded by striking out Cody Overbeck for the first out of the frame. With Goris now up, Buschini attempted to steal second. On the play, Cruz's pitch skipped by catcher Rene Garcia, allowing Buschini to scamper all the way to third. Goris then gave San Antonio their fourth straight win when his fly out to center was deep enough to bring home Buschini.

HOMER HAPPY: San Antonio has hit 85 homers in 2014, which is tied for the 4th most at the Double-A level. The Missions have out-homered their opponents by 29 this season and have a 48-35 edge on the road. San Antonio leads the Texas League in homers by 10. They have not led the TL in the category since 1992 when they hit 92. Last season, the Missions had just 69 homers through July.

OFFENSE IGNITED: The Missions got off to a 5-12 start in July thanks primarily to their inability to score runs. In those 17 games, San Antonio scored just 60 runs (3.5 RPG). During their current four-game win streak, the club has scored 30 runs, tied with Triple-A Charlotte and Double-A Montgomery for the most among all MiLB full-season squads. Frisco has scored just two runs less during that same time period.

LIRIANO SHINES IN AAA DEBUT: Former Missions' OF Rymer Liriano went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and four runs scored in his Triple-A debut last night as El Paso rolled to a 16-7 win over Sacramento. At the time of his promotion, Liriano was hitting .264 with 14 homers, 53 RBI and a league-leading 55 runs in 99 games with San Antonio.
