Olt, Soler Join Iowa Cubs

Des Moines, IA - The Chicago Cubs recalled LH Tsuyoshi Wada on Wednesday and optioned INF Mike Olt to the Iowa Cubs. The Cubs also promoted OF Jorge Soler from double-A Tennessee to Iowa, placed OF Manny Ramirez on the disabled list, and assigned 1B Lars Anderson to Tennessee. Olt and Soler will be active for Thursday night's game against the New Orleans Zephyrs at Principal Park.

Olt batted .139 (26-for-187) with four doubles, 12 home runs, 30 RBI, and 2 runs scored in 72 games with Chicago this season. He leads all National League rookies in homers and is second in RBI. The Cubs acquired Olt along with pitchers C.J. Edwards, Justin Grimm, and Neil Ramirez from the Texas Rangers on July 22, 2013 in exchange for RH Matt Garza. Olt joined the I-Cubs after the trade and batted .168 (22-for-131) with three home runs and eight RBI in 39 games to finish the year. In 2012, Olt led the double-A Texas League with 28 home runs in 95 games for Frisco before making his big league debut with the Rangers.

Baseball America rated Soler as the Cubs' fifth-best prospect entering this season. He has batted .415 (27-for-65) with nine doubles, a triple, six home runs, and 22 RBI in 22 games at Tennessee this season. He has had two stints on the disabled list due to hamstring strains. He batted .391 (9-for-23) with a home run and six RBI in seven games on rehab in the Arizona Rookie League. Soler defected from Cuba and signed a nine-year major league contract with the Cubs on June 30, 2012. Last year, he hit .255 (59-for-210) with 13 doubles, eight home runs, and 15 RBI in 55 games with high-A Daytona in the Florida State League and was named to the FSL mid-season All-Star Team. Following last season, he hit .271 (23-for-85) with six doubles, a home run, and 14 RBI in 20 games for the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League.

Ramirez is batting .176 (6-for-34) with a home run and four RBI in 11 games with Iowa this season. He signed with the Chicago Cubs on May 25 as a player/coach and joined Iowa on June 23.

Anderson is batting .287 (25-for-87) with five doubles, four home runs, and 19 RBI in 34 games with the I-Cubs. He was out May 17-July 11 due to an inner-ear infection.

The Cubs and Zephyrs wrap up a four-game series tonight at 7:05 PM. LH Eric Jokisch (5-8, 4.04) will start for the Cubs against RH Alex Sanabia (5-3, 4.79) for New Orleans. The gates open at 5:35. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
