 Midland RockHounds

Gallo's Blast Spoils Homestand Finale

July 24, 2014 - Texas League (TL1)
Midland RockHounds News Release

Wednesday night's game between the RockHounds and Frisco saw 327 pitches thrown ... 17 walks issued ... two batters hit ... two more reaching on errors ... two dozen runners stranded (and three more squandered on a double play, a caught stealing and some questionable base running) ... all with the score tied, 3-3, in the top of the ninth.

At that point, Frisco's Joey Gallo "took matters into his own bat." Minor League Baseball's top power hitting prospect took a Ryan Dull pitch more than 400 feet to the batter's eye in center field. The towering two-run home run gave Frisco a 5-3 win.

Combined, the clubs loaded the bases five times ... scored a combined four runs ... and left the bases full in each of the five innings (Frisco in the first and second ... the 'Hounds in the second, seventh and eighth). The game was a 2-2 tie from the fourth until the seventh, when both clubs scored a single run. The RockHounds had the bases loaded with one out in the eighth, but failed to score. Gallo's home run in the ninth, which came on a 1-2 pitch with two out, then decided the game.

Gallo, rated the Texas Rangers' # 4 prospect by Baseball America, now leads the RoughRiders with 12 home runs while playing in just 37 games. In the last three games of the series (including Tuesday's double-header), he hit two home runs and drove in seven.

WP: Will Lamb (3-1, 1.15)

LP: Ryan Dull (4-4, 3.27)

HR: Frisco - Joey Gallo (12) A 2-run HR in the ninth (off Ryan Dull)

Kibbles & Bits

- Frisco took the four-game series (which included a make-up game for a June rainout), 3-games-to-1 ... the RoughRiders reclaimed the Texas League's best record at 58-44, a half-game better than the RockHounds (58-45) ... the 'Hounds finished with a split of their eight-game home stand, taking 3-of-4 from San Antonio before dropping 3-of-4 to Frisco ... the club is 15-6 in its last 21 games, but has dropped 4-of-its-last-5. The 'Hounds (20-13) now lead Frisco (18-15) by two games ... San Antonio (17-16) by three and Corpus Christi (16-17) by four games in the Texas League South. The Missions completed a three-game (home) sweep of the Hooks with a 5-4 come-from-behind win Wednesday night.

He went 6.0 innings (on 105 pitches) allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits, four walks and two hit batsmen, while striking out five. Through the first three innings, he and Frisco starter Alex Gonzalez had thrown a combined 129 pitches (Haviland 60 and Gonzalez 69). Texas' # 5 prospect (according to Baseball America), Gonzalez walked six batters in three innings after walking a total of nine in his first eight starts (35.1 innings) with the RoughRiders.

- Frank Gailey allowed a run in the seventh on Trever Adams' RBI single and Ryan Dull gave up a pair on Joey Gallo's game-winning home run in the ninth. Neither of the RockHounds relievers had allowed an earned run in his last 10 appearances entering Wednesday's game.

- Catcher Bruce Maxwell has joined the RockHounds from the (Advanced-A) Stockton Ports, and Beau Taylor has been reassigned to the California League club. Taylor was hitting .239 with three HR and 26 RBI in 63 games with the RockHounds.
