Rogues Take Game Two

July 24, 2014 - West Coast League (WCL)
Medford Rogues News Release

MEDFORD, OR - The Medford Rogues bounced back from last night's disappointment to defeat the Walla Walla Sweets in game two of the series 6-4 tonight at Harry and David Field. With the win, the Rogues now hold a 20-18 record in league play and sit 2.5 games behind second place Bend in the South Division. Walla Walla now has an even 19-19 record in league play.

It seemed an all too familiar scene at Harry and David ballpark as it was Walla Walla who took the lead first once again with a run in the second inning. It was short lived however, as the Rogues exploded for four runs in the third followed by two runs in the fourth to give themselves a comfortable five run cushion.

The visitors refused to go quietly and gave the 1,131 fans at Harry and David Field a reason to fret in the sixth as the Sweets hammered in three runs to put themselves just two runs away from a tie. The Rogues held out though to end the night on a high and a much needed win.

On offense, the Rogues were led by center fielder Spencer Smith who in four at bats recorded one run, two hits as well as one RBI. Smith's BA for the season improves .299. Designated Hitter Nathan Etheridge also had another solid appearance at bat with three at bats for one run, one hit and one RBI while his BA now stands at .368 for the season. Third baseman Adonis Morrison also contributed to the Rogues win with two at bats for one hit, one run, and one RBI.

Lefty Christian Cox started on the mound for the Rogues and recorded the win, his first of the season against two losses, pitching six solid innings. Cox recorded eight hits for four runs, four earned runs, one walk, and four strikeouts while his ERA for the season now stands at 4.13.

For the Sweets, pitcher Spencer Hobson (1-1) was credited with the loss from his three innings pitched. Hobson gave up eight hits, six runs for five earned runs and his ERA is 4.78.

With the series tied at 1-1, the Rogues and Sweets face for the third and final time this season tomorrow night at Harry and David Field with game time set for 6:35pm.
