Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

JOLIET, IL - For the second straight night, Traverse City and Joliet needed extra innings to decide a winner and as was the case the night before, the Beach Bums came out on top, knocking off the Slammers 4-2 in 11 innings on Wednesday night at Silver Cross Field, taking the series.

In the decisive 11th frame, Yazy Arbelo led off with a hustle double to left field before leaving the game with a leg injury. Rob Benedict pinch ran and moved up to third on a wild pitch before scampering home on a sacrifice fly from Jose Vargas to put TC on top 3-2. Jovan Rosa and Sean Gusrang followed with singles before Kevin Taylor laced a two-out single to left to plate Rosa and open the lead to 4-2.

D.J. Johnson came on in the last of the 11th inning and retired the Slammers in order to pick up his 14th save of the season. Will Rankin (3-3) had pitched two scoreless frames in the ninth and tenth innings to pick up the victory for Traverse City.

Ian MacDougall and Andrew Busby started for Traverse City and Joliet, respectively, and engaged in a great pitcher's duel. The Slammers took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning with an unearned run. Russell Moldenhauer reached on a throwing error to lead off the frame and came around to score on an Adrian English single to put Joliet ahead.

The score remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth when Greg Harisis singled and was followed by an Arbelo two-run blast to right-center field. It was Arbelo's 11th homer of the year as part of a 2-for-5 night with a double, home run and two RBI.

MacDougall pitched all the way into the eighth inning for Traverse City with an extremely low pitch count. In the eighth, Grant DeBruin singled with one out and scored on a Moldenhauer double to even the game at two. MacDougall finished with a no decision, needing just 89 pitches to complete the career-high eight frames. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with three strikeouts.

Busby went 7.1 innings for Joliet, giving up two runs on five hits in a no decision. Sam Moore (3-4) took the loss by giving up the two runs in the top of the 11th inning.

Traverse City will now continue its six-game road trip with the opener of a three-game series at Schaumburg on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. ET. Casey Delgado (5-3, 3.14) gets the ball for the Beach Bums against the Boomers' Cal Bowling (5-5, 5.43). Fans can listen to the broadcast starting at 7:15 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
