Brazos Valley Bombers News Release

Dallas, TX (July 23, 2014) - The Brazos Valley Bombers (31-11) split a double header with the Texas Marshals (16-27) on Wednesday, taking the first seven inning game 3-2 and conceding the second 6-8.

Second baseman Jimmy Norris was the first to cross the plate in the first game, scoring on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Dane Steinhagen in the second inning. Third baseman Hunter Hagler added his first home run of the season to his resume and brought in the Bombers' second run of the night in the fourth inning. The third run was scored again by Hagler, this time on a single by Steinhagen in the sixth.

Heston Van Fleet took the win on the mound in the first game with five strikeouts in his six innings of work. Closer Cannon Chadwick took the save, holding the Marshals to their two runs.

"Heston did a good job competing tonight," said head coach Curt Dixon. "The good thing about what Heston does is he commands the zone, doesn't walk guys. He gives up a few hits with nobody on base he doesn't get beat. It was really good for him, setting the tone, going six innings and starting a double header."

In the second game, first baseman G.R. Hinsley knocked a home run out of the park in his first at bat. Hinsley's run was followed up by two more in the second inning. Catcher Robie Rojas scored on a double by Steinhagen, shortly followed by another double by center fielder Matt Hilston that brought Steinhagen back home.

The Marshals were able to send five runs across the plate in the middle of the game to take the lead. The Bombers rallied in the final two innings, but were unable to overcome the Marshals.

"We did a good job to fight there at the end, with all the things that went wrong for us and the momentum that we didn't take advantage of, and still be a base hit away from tying the game there at the end," Dixon said. "It says a lot about the fight of our team and how talented our team is to play that bad and still be in it until the last pitch."

Third baseman Logan Nottebrok scored in the sixth inning after a hit by shortstop Kolbey Carpenter. Rojas hit a double in the sixth to send designated hitter Grady Caldwell home. Left fielder Ford Moore scored the final run in the seventh inning behind a single by Caldwell.

Bombers pitcher Zach Girrens took the loss for the night with two innings under his belt and two strikeouts. Nick Johnson and Brandon Kirkham stepped out of the bullpen and recorded one strikeout each.

The Bombers return home to Cellucor Field on Thursday to face the Acadiana Cane Cutters at 7:05 p.m. for the first game in a two game series.
