Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill.- Some home cooking was exactly what the Cougars needed as they snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark Wednesday evening. The Cougars (20-11, 65-36) can continue their trend of not losing a series at home with a win over the Silver Hawks (19-12, 59-41) on Thursday.
Duane Underwood (5-2) pitched five solid innings to begin the ballgame as he allowed just three hits all day, two of them being solo home runs from Michael Perez. South Bend opened the scoring in the game with a Perez solo blast in the second inning. The lead was short lived.
An Andrew Velazquez error allowed Cael Brockmeyer to reach in the bottom of the second and keep the inning alive. Two batters later Kevin Brown singled home Jeimier Candelario to tie up the contest at one. An inning later it was Candelario driving in runs when he looped a two-run single into left field to score Carlos Penalver and Ben Carhart for a 3-1 Cougars' lead.
After Perez's second homer, the Cougars tacked on another pair of runs in the sixth with another RBI hit from Brown and a sacrifice fly from Shawon Dunston Jr.
After Underwood fanned seven Silver Hawks through five innings, Gerardo Concepcion tossed three scoreless frames including escaping a bases-loaded jam in the eighth. Jose Arias picked up his third save of the season pitching a scoreless ninth.
Brent Jones (1-1) suffered the loss despite all the runs he allowed to score were unearned.
The series continues on Thursday with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. The pitching matchup will consist of Jen-Ho Tseng (5-0) for the Cougars against South Bend's Johnny Omahen (4-4, 2.89). For tickets call 630-232-8811 or log onto kccougars.com.
