Power Rally for Naught

(Hickory, NC- July 23, 2014)- The West Virginia Power lost 3-2 to the Hickory Crawdads on Wednesday night at L.P. Frans Stadium. The Power tied the game at two in the eighth with a home run, but the Crawdads recaptured the lead in the bottom of the inning for good on a solo home run.

West Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly. Reese McGuire singled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a fielder's choice and a throwing error. Kawika Emsley-Pai filed out to left and brought home McGuire to stake spot starter Felipe Gonzalez to the early advantage.

In the home half of the fourth inning, Gonzalez allowed three straight singles to load the bases and walked Travis Demeritte to even the score at one. Zack Von Rosenberg relieved Gonzalez and allowed a single to Ronald Guzman that plated Jairo Beras to give Hickory a 2-1 lead.

West Virginia did not manage any base hits between the second and eighth innings. Erich Weiss led off the top of the eighth with a solo home run to left-center field to tie the game at two.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Crawdads' Kellin Deglan drove a 1-0 pitch from Power reliever Brett McKinney over the right field wall to push Hickory back in front 3-2.

McKinney (2-3) took the loss while Pat Kaminska (1-0) vultured the win. Jose Valdespina worked the ninth for his first save of the season.

West Virginia and Hickory play game two of this series on Thursday night. Buddy Borden will start for the Power against the Crawdads Cole Wiper. West Virginia continues their current road trip through July 29.
