Winston-Salem, NC --- The Potomac Nationals (54-46, 16-15) dropped game two of their three game series against the Winston-Salem Dash (47-56, 17-17) on Wednesday afternoon, 9-4. The Dash exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning to blow the game open.
Winston-Salem's big inning came at the expense of starter RHP Austin Voth (L, 2-1) and RHP Travis Henke. The first three Dash batters reached base and scored against Voth, and LF Courtney Hawkins belted his 16th home run of the year to run Voth from the game. With the score 5-1, DH Nick Basto launched a three-run shot to left-center field off Henke to extend the lead. It was Basto's second tater of the series against the P-Nats. Voth allowed five runs on six hits with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
The Dash had help from their starting pitcher RHP Tyler Danish (W, 3-2), who allowed a run on five hits over his six innings of work. Danish's lone blemish came in the top of the first when 2B Tony Renda scored on a double play ball. The P-Nats grounded into four double plays in the first five innings and left eight runners on base in the game.
The P-Nats tried to mount a comeback in the seventh inning off of RHP Brad Goldberg. C Pedro Severino slapped an RBI-double scoring RF Estarlin Martinez. A Renda ground out brought another run in, and SS Stephen Perez kept it going with an RBI-single of his own to make it an 8-4 game.
The Nationals were shut down in the end by LHP Jose Bautista and RHP Zach Isler in the eighth and ninth respectively.
1B Shawn Pleffner collected three base hits and a walk in four at-bats. The P-Nats drew six walks in the contest.
