Hadlock Field - Portland, ME - 6:00 PM
LAST GAME: The Portland Sea Dogs got a walk-off RBI double from Jonathan Roof in the bottom of the ninth inning against Jon Velasquez to top the Binghamton Mets, 4-3, on Tuesday night at Hadlock Field. Dilson Herrera and Travis Taijeron each hit solo home runs in the fifth inning to tie the game. Herrera finished a double shy of the cycle in a 3-for-4 performance. The three through seven batters in the B-Met lineup went a combined 0-for-18. Luis Diaz tossed seven innings and struck out seven Binghamton players, while Rainy Lara went 5.1 frames and gave up three runs and struck out four. Binghamton has lost seven straight at Hadlock Field and drops 5.5 games back of Portland in the Eastern Division.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: LHP Steven Matz takes the hill for the sixth time this season and the second time against Portland. The southpaw is coming off a win in his latest outing. He gave up two runs (one earned) in five innings in a 8-4 Binghamton win on Thursday, July 17. In his only other outing against the Sea Dogs, Matz went 5.1 frames and allowed three runs while striking out five on July 10. Binghamton won the game 13-3. The Stony Brook, New York native was taken by the Mets in the second round of the 2009 draft out of Ward Melville Senior High School.
PORTLAND STARTER: RHP Mike Augliera makes his 19th start of the season and his second against the B-Mets. The Binghamton University product is coming off a win in his latest outing. He went 7.2 frames and allowed two runs in a 6-2 victory over New Hampshire on Monday, July 14. It was his longest outing of the year. Augliera is 0-2 against Binghamton in 2014. He's given up 11 runs (eight earned) on sixteen hits in 13 innings in those games. The Old Bridge, New Jersey native was taken by Boston in the fifth round of the 2012 draft.
HARD TIMES AT HADLOCK: Tuesday's loss to Portland was the B-Mets seventh straight at Hadlock Field. Two of those losses have come in walk-off fashion. The team is just 1-8 in Portland this season and has been outscored 37-18 in those games. The B-Mets have a winning record on the road against every other team in the league that it has played, except New Britain. Binghamton has yet to travel to Reading, Harrisburg, Richmond or Trenton.
HOLY HERRERA!: Binghamton INF Dilson Herrera went 1-for-4 on Monday to extend his hitting streak to nine games. This comes on the heels of an 11-game stretch earlier this month. He has a hit in 20 of the last 21 contests. The 20-year-old has tallied at least one hit in all but four of his outings since joining Binghamton on June 19 and has gone hitless just once in July
YARD SALE CONTINUES: The B-Mets hit two more home run in the loss on Tuesday to bring their league-leading total to 98. That's nine more than any other team in the league. Binghamton has managed 31 long balls in July, including seven in the last three games.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE: Binghamton has lost four of five for the first time since June 5 - 9. The team has been outscored 24-18 in those games and hasn't tallied more than five runs in any outing. The team averages 5.2 runs per game this season.
BATTLE OF THE BESTS: Binghamton and Portland can be found near the top of the league in most offensive categories. The B-Mets are in the top three in batting average, runs, home runs and slugging percentage. On the other side, the Sea Dogs are first in batting average, runs and slugging percentage, along with fifth in stolen bases.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: Binghamton continues its road trip and starts a series with Trenton on Thursday at 7:05 PM. RHP Tyler Pill takes the hill for the B-Mets in the opener against RHP Luis Severino for the Thunder.
