Salem Red Sox Game Notes

July 23, 2014 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release

Salem looks to build off last night's 10-0 victory tonight in game two of the series at City Stadium with the Lynchburg Hillcats. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.

Offensive Power Surge: Sox bats erupted last night for 10 runs on 13 hits against the Lynchburg Hillcats. It was just the second time Sa- lem posted double digit runs since the all-star break (6/21 @ WS). Most impressively, seven of the Sox 10 runs came with two outs. Eight of the nine Sox who started the game picked up hits and six Sox drove in a run. The ten run margin of victory was the Sox largest since an 18-2 win over Carolina on May 8th.

Welcome to the Roanoke Valley: The Salem Sox received two new infielders over the last week. Nick Moore was promoted from Lowell on Thursday. Moore hit .254 in 17 games with the Spinners (16/63), with three home runs and 13 RBIs. Moore made his Carolina League debut on Friday, going 1-4 against Frederick. Moore is 2-8 to start his Carolina League career, including scoring the go-ahead run in the seventh inning to put the Sox up 2-1 Sunday night.

The Sox received Carlos Asuaje from Class-A Greenville before Satur- day's game. Asuaje was arguably Greenville's best player this year, especially after Jantzen Witte's promotion to Salem after the all-star break. Asuaje hit .305 in 90 games with the Drive, launching 11 home runs and 73 RBIs. Most impressively, Asuaje was even better with runners in scoring position, holding a .383 clip (36/94). After begin- ning his Carolina League career 1-13, Asuaje launched his first home run with Salem last night. He finished the contest 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Beyond the Numbers: Joe Gunkel may only be 1-3, but the right hander has certainly pitched better than his numbers might indicate. Outside of one rough outing against Frederick on July 7th, Gunkel holds a 2.67 ERA in his other five starts this season. All three of Gun- kel's losses have come against Frederick. Gunkel allowed three earned runs his last time out, going six and two thirds of solid ball. And Gunkel dropped a rain shortened five inning game in which he allowed two earned runs in four innings. Joe is 0-3 with a 6.32 ERA against the Keys, and 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA in his other three starts.

Notable Nuggets: Over the last 25 games dating back to June 25th, Salem starters have allowed three earned runs or less in 23 of 25 starts. Furthermore, Sox starters have surrendered two earned runs or less in 19 of their last 25 starts. However, the Sox are just 12-13 in those 25 games.

The Salem Sox are just 7-21 against Potomac and Frederick this sea- son, while they are 39-32 against the rest of the Carolina League. In the second half of the season, Salem is 2-13 against the Keys and P- Nats, and 11-5 against its other five league opponents.

Carson Blair had his Carolina League season high 28 game on base streak end, but he still has been on a tear away from LewisGale Field. Blair has reached base safely in 15 consecutive road games dating back to June 1st. Blair is hitting .429 on the road during that stretch, including a .515 on base percentage.
