NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, dropped a doubleheader to the Washington Wild Things by scores of 10-5 and 4-3 on Tuesday night at the Corn Crib.

The CornBelters scored first in the opener in their first time up Jhiomar Veras led off with a single, was balked to second and scored on a base hit by Santiago Chirino. The Wild Things evened the game right away in the second inning with a two-out rally capped by an RBI single by Jose Dore.

The Belters grabbed a 4-1 lead in the third inning thanks to a two-run double by Sam Judah and a sacrifice fly from Aaron Dudley. Washington again equaled the score at 4-4 in their next at bat with a three-run homer to left by Ryan Kresky, then took a 5-4 lead in the fifth on a lead-off opposite field home run to left by C.J. Beatty and increased to 7-4 later in the frame on a two-run homer to left by Jim Vahalik to end the night for Belters starter Cullen Babin. Beatty's second homer of the night, a two-run shot to left with two outs in the sixth, extended the guests' advantage to 9-4.

The Wild Things increased the lead to 10-4 in the seventh when Will Beckwith led off with a single and scored from first on a Kresky base hit coupled with a two-base throwing error. Tyler Shover clubbed a home run over the center field fence to lead off the seventh for the opener's final tally.

Babin (5-4) took the opening game loss while Wild Things starter Alex Kaminsky (2-4) worked five innings for the win.

In the nightcap, the Wild Things resumed using the long ball as Will Beckwith homered to left center to lead off the second inning, then hit a one-out solo long ball in the fourth. Washington added a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning when a throwing error by Belters pitcher Bobby Shore on a bunt attempt by Daniel Poma scored Jose Dore all the way from first base, and Poma scored on a sacrifice fly by Scott Kalamar for a 4-0 lead.

The Belters finally dented the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Tyler Shover slapped a bases-loaded pinch-hit single to right to score a pair followed by an RBI single from Dylan Kelly to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Shawn Blackwell (7-2) earned the win with two innings of relief while Shore (3-4) took the loss. Jonathan Kountis pitched the final frame for his league-leading 21st save.
