Norfolk Tides News Release

Norfolk, VA - Norfolk pounded out 17 hits and Chris Jones spun seven strong innings as Norfolk cruised to a 12-4 win over the Toledo Mud Hens in front of 8,577 fans Tuesday night at Harbor Park.

Every Norfolk batter had a hit and an RBI in the contest as the Tides won for the eighth time in the last nine games. Norfolk went 9-for-16 with runners in scoring position, with six different players collecting multiple hits in the contest.

The Tides led the ballgame 4-2 before exploding for seven runs in the fifth inning. Norfolk sent 11 men to the plate in the decisive frame, with six different batters driving in a run in the inning off of Kyle Lobstein (7-10) and Chad Smith.

Dariel Alvarez had three hits and two RBI to help power the offense, while Julio Borbon added three hits, an RBI and a run scored. Steve Lombardozzi and Quintin Berry each registered two hits and two runs batted in, while Brian Ward and Ivan De Jesus joined the offensive outburst with two hits and an RBI.

Jones (6-5) was the beneficiary of the offensive output, although the 25-year-old southpaw did not need much help. Making his seventh start of the season, Jones yielded three runs - two earned - on six hits as he struck out six without walking a batter. He also set a career-high with 7.0 innings pitched as he picked up his third straight winning decision.

Over his last seven outings (five starts, two relief appearances), Jones has now gone 3-1 with a 2.02 ERA (8 ER, 35.2 IP). During that stretch, he's walked 11 while striking out 28 as he's held opposing batters to a .171 average (21-123).

With the win, Norfolk improved to 16-2 over the last three seasons against the Mud Hens. The Tides also moved to 29-28 at Harbor Park, the first time Norfolk has been above the .500 mark at home this season.

The two clubs will continue their four-game series Wednesday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 7:05. Steve Johnson (0-0, 6.11) is set to come off the disabled list and make the start for Norfolk, with left-hander Duane Below (8-3, 3.86) scheduled to make the start for Toledo.
