Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (July 22, 2014) - Winston-Salem overcame a four-run deficit and took its first lead during its last at-bat, rallying for a 6-5 win over the Potomac Nationals at BB&T Ballpark on Tuesday night.

With a crowd of 4,868 looking on, the Dash (16-17, 46-56) trailed 5-4 entering the bottom of the eighth. Nick Basto registered a one-out single against Potomac reliever Kylin Turnbull (0-3). Omar Narvaez bounced into a fielder's choice, erasing Basto from the basepaths. Cleuluis Rondon singled up the middle, setting up runners at first and second with two outs.

Jacob May came through with the big hit, stroking a fly ball to deep left-center field. Left fielder Mike McQuillan tried to chase it down, but slammed into the fence as the ball bounced away. Narvaez and Rondon scored as May raced into third with a go-ahead triple, putting Winston-Salem on top 6-5.

Dash reliever Kyle Hansen (7-4) escaped a jam in the top of the ninth inning. After striking out the first two hitters, Oscar Tejeda singled and Mike McQuillan walked to place the potential tying run in scoring position. However, the right-hander whiffed Khayyan Norfork to preserve the victory.

With the victory, Winston-Salem continues its dominance over Potomac at BB&T Ballpark, winning 22 of 28 meetings at the downtown facility since the beginning of the 2012 season. It was also the seventh Dash triumph in their last at-bat this season.

Potomac (16-14, 54-45) captured an early lead against Winston-Salem starter James Dykstra. Tony Renda and Stephen Perez opened the first inning with back-to-back singles. Shawn Pleffner walked to load the bases. Tejeda's infield hit chased Renda home, and McQuillan cleared the bases with a three-run double, giving the Nationals a 4-0 lead.

The Dash used the long ball to get on the board in the fourth inning. Basto launched a solo homer, his fourth of the season to left field, against Potomac starter Dakota Bacus to cut the deficit to 4-1.

Defensive miscues plagued the P-Nats in the bottom of the sixth. Joey DeMichele doubled down the left field line, and Keon Barnum singled him home. Basto singled to keep the rally going. Narvaez reached on a throwing error by Bacus, allowing Barnum to come home and make it a 4-3 game. Rondon lined out to the shortstop Perez, but a wild throw while trying to double off Basto at second base allowed Basto to score the tying run.

The Dash defense gave Potomac a break in the top of the seventh. With runners at the corners and two outs, McQuillan's grounder was bobbled by the first baseman Barnum, plating Renda to put the Nationals back in front, 5-4.

The teams will meet in the middle game of the series Wednesday afternoon. Right-hander Tyler Danish (2-2, 3.64 ERA) will get the ball for Winston-Salem, while Potomac counters with righty Austin Voth (2-0, 0.27 ERA).

First pitch on Camp Day at BB&T Ballpark is set for noon. For tickets to the Wednesday matinee, visit wsdash.com or call (336) 714-2287.
