Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Akron, Ohio) July 22, 2014 - The Richmond Flying Squirrels (62-41) played longball against the Akron RubberDucks (57-47), slugging home runs that accounted for six RBI in their 8-2 win on Tuesday evening at Canal Park.
The loss marks the sixth straight for the RubberDucks, the longest losing streak of the season. Akron now trails Richmond by 5 1/2 games in the EL West.
Will Roberts was charged with the loss in his 20th start of the season, bringing his record to 10-10. In the five and 1/3 innings on the mound, Roberts threw 12 hits, allowed seven earned runs, two homers, walked one and struck out another.
Roberts has earned a decision in every start on the season, and has worked at least five innings in 40 of his 43 career AA starts.
Richmond grabbed an early lead in the third, with a two run homer clubbed by Jarrett Parker to extend their lead to 3-0. A three-run homer parked in right field by Myles Schroder doubled the Flying Squirrels' lead, 6-0 in the fourth.
Tyler LaTorre tacked on an additional run in the sixth for Richmond, crossing the plate on a wild pitch. LaTorre reached base initially after being walked by Akron reliever Adam Miller.
A solo homer by Richmond's Ricky Oropesa tacked the Squirrels' final run on the board in the seventh, extending their lead over Akron to 8-0.
The RubberDucks spoiled the Richmond shutout in the eighth inning, when a triple off the bat of Erik Gonzalez sent Jordan Smith across the plate. A single stroked by Anthony Gallas drove Gonzalez home, bringing the score to 8-2.
Smith extended his hitting streak to nine games with a lead-off double in the first. Smith went 2-3 in the game, and is 5-8 so far in the series.
Richmond reliever Edwin Quirarte picked up the win, bringing his record to 8-4. In his three innings on the bump, Quirarte allowed one hit, and struck out two batters.
