HarbourCats Open Post-All-Star Portion of Season

July 22, 2014 - West Coast League (WCL)
Victoria HabourCats News Release

The Victoria HarbourCats are in Longview, WA, Tuesday through Thursday for a three-game series that starts the final 18-game stretch of the 2014 West Coast League regular season -- the post-All-Star segment of the season.

The West Division-rival Cowlitz Black Bears, the hosts for this series, are among the teams the HarbourCats will have to outrace to the wire to claim the final playoff spot, the wildcard position.

On Monday in Klamath Falls, Oregon, an evening thunderstorm cut the 2014 All-Star Game out of the festivities, after the teams had taken batting practice, the players had shown their stuff to a group of Major League Baseball scouts, and the home run derby took place.

And what a home run derby it was!

Gabe Clark of the HarbourCats, a star with Oregon State University who could be the cleanup hitter for one of the top-ranked NCAA schools next season, put on a show with towering shot after towering shot, hitting 10 home runs in the first round, surviving a tie in the second round, and bombing four more at Kiger Stadium to win the home run title. Clark's display was beyond impressive.

The game itself never happened, keeping Clark and teammates Alex DeGoti, Alex Rogers and Logan Lombana from showing their stuff further.

In the series with the Black Bears, the HarbourCats will send right-handed pitcher Mikey Wright to the mound tonight, followed by Alex Fagalde and Quintin Torres-Costa. On Friday, the HarbourCats will hand out their first-ever baseball cards on Black Press Carrier Night when one of the league's flagship franchises, the Corvallis Knights, come to Victoria. Alex Rogers will start that night, with Logan Lombana going in the Saturday night game. For Sunday afternoon's game, the starting pitcher has yet to be announced.
