Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

IronBirds Lose 7-0, Swept by Scrappers

The IronBirds lost their sixth consecutive game, falling 7-0 to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. Aberdeen's offense was quiet for the majority of the night, recording just five hits. Justin Viele had a multi-hit night, singling in the third and seventh inning. John Means got the start for Aberdeen, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing nine hits, five runs, and striking out 2. He received his first lost of the season. Julian Merryweather got the win for the Scrappers, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing three hits, no runs, and striking out five batters.

A Rough Road Trip

The IronBirds were swept in both their series at Tri-City and Mahoning Valley during their six-game road trip. Aberdeen was outscored ten runs to eighteen runs in their road trip against the ValleyCats and was outscored six runs to twenty-four runs in their series against the Scrappers.

The Good Streak and the Bad Streak

After going on a six-game streak, which included two wins over Staten Island, a sweep of Batavia, and a win over Auburn, the IronBirds suffered a six-game losing streak over their six-game road trip. Though their six-game winning streak is the longest on the season, the most recent losing streak is not their longest on the season, as they lost 11 straight earlier in the season.

No Sleep 'Til...

The IronBirds return back home to Ripken Stadium to face the Brooklyn Cyclones. They've already faced their McNamara Division rival eight times on the season, going 2-6. The IronBirds most recently took two of three from the Cyclones on June 4-6 at MCU Park.

On The Mound Tonight...

The IronBirds will send LHP Stephen Tarpley to the hill tonight against Brooklyn. Tarpley is 0-1 on the year with a 6.04 ERA and is leading Aberdeen in innings pitched, walks, and games started. In his most recent start, he pitched 4.0 innings, allowed three hits, two runs (both unearned), walked three, and struck out two. He will be opposed by Brandon Welch, who is starting for the Cyclones. Welch is 2-2 on the year with a 3.98 ERA.
